cHAPTER 6

Mariah

The opening of the library was today. Chiron has spoken a few words and then we were allowed to browse for books. I felt a tug on my jacket and turned. "B?" She put her finger on her lip.

"Come." She grabbed my hand. I half stumbled out of the library.

"Where are we going?" She let go of my hand and tried to sprint.

"We- there's... there's something at the border."

"No no no. Hold on to me." I grabbed her hand as we went up the hill.

"See... something." B fell on the ground.

"What's- oh my gods." I put my hand to my mouth.

Thousands of monsters had lined up, all growling. Some had hair sprouting around their face, like a fan on a lion, and others had green, scaly skin. The biggest and ugliest one stood at the front, a combination of both types of monsters. The rows went on forever. "There's the half blood!" A monster roared.

And they all started running up the hill.

"B!" I screamed. "GET UP!" I ran to Thalia's tree and did a roundhouse kick to ring a bell. 5 seconds later, demigods in full armour started running up the hill. B tried getting up, but her face went slack.

"Mariah, I can't-" she yelped as an invisible force yanked her across the border. She was left hanging as a monster came and picked her up with his nails.

The monster was a half snake and half lion. He had a snake bottom, gold and green scales glistening in the sun. His top half was yellow and gold. The monster roared, showing his teeth that were glistening with poison. He held a club in his right hand and B in his left, who was currently being jerked up and down as if she were on a bungee cord.

"Ha ha ha!" The monster's voice boomed. "You're mine, El- AHHH!" B managed to kick his eye somehow and jumped up to use his face to launch herself halfway across the field. In the middle of it all, I saw her hands shimmer and saw something appear on her hands. Where did that come from? B landed perfectly and landed on her toes, one leg bent and the other stretched out. What a hottie. The monster must have seen her gloved, because he let out a chuckle. "You think you're safe there? Think again, demigod!" He started walking toward the border.

At this point, demigods were battling at it looked like we were winning. Damion ran up to me. "What does he think he's doing?" I asked him. Damion looked at B and saw her hands. His eyes widened.

"We have to go to B." He started running toward her.

"What?"

"I'll tell you later. But for now, I need to lend your energy." He grabbed my hand. I nodded. He held out his other hand toward the border. We made it to B and stood next to her. I looked at the monster and saw him getting really close to the border.

"He'll bounce off of it, right?" I looked at Damion. "Right?" I saw the monster, crossing my fingers that he will stay on that side, but instead, saw him walk right through the border. A chorus of gasps ran through the camp. He cackled. Damion and B both fell on the ground. I screamed their names. Damion got back on his feet and returned to his original position. B scrambled up after him. She looked at Damion and copied his stance. The monster was getting closer to us. I could feel his footsteps. "10 metres away!" I yelled out.

Damion moved his hands in a clockwise position and pulled his elbows back. B did the same. "5 meters!"

"Now, I can finish you, once and for all, daughter of dust!" He raised his club. At once, Damion pushed his hands out. I gasped as I felt all my energy being sucked from me. B did the same. I closed my eyes, hoping that the pain would subside. I slowly opened them to see the monster being pushed away from camp. "No!" He wailed. "Retreat!" He said in a shrill voice. "Retreat!" All the monsters started moving back. Soon, none were in sight. Damion hunched over, panting.
