cHAPTER 5

Mariah

"Hello, Mariah!" Tiffany waved her hand over.

"Hi, Tiff." I waved back. "This is B. She's a new camper."

"Hello." Tiffany looked at me.

"Oh, I don't know sign language." She smiled, a bit embarrassed.

"It's fine. She said hi." I translated. "We have the plans for the shelving." I handed the paper to her.

"Thanks." B looked pretty excited, so Tiff must have seen her face as she spoke the next sentence. "Your friend over here looks quite excited so I'm assuming she would like a tour?" B literally jumped in the air, her hair flying behind her.

"Yes please." She signed and regained her posture, but you could still tell she was very excited.

"We would love to." I smiled at B put her fist in the air.

***

B gasped as she saw the library. "It isn't finished yet, but it's coming together quite nicely." I chuckled as B did a huge 360.

The library was enchanted to seem small on the outside but huge on the inside. It looked almost like a church, but much bigger. The bookshelves went from the floor to the roof. There was a huge stained glass painting that showed the Gods. There were lounge chairs in the middle with a fire that was also enchanted. It was made to let people throw books into it, but instead of burning they would be transported to the correct placing.

"This is amazing!" B signed, her hand gestures a little faster because of her excitement, but I managed to keep up. "When will it open?"

"2 days." Tiffany's spoke after I translated the sign language for her. "You can look around if you want to."

B bolted off. I laughed and started to wander on my own. I was walking into a new corridor when I heard creaking coming from above me. I waited for a moment, then heard another creak.

That was when a pillar splintered into pieces and layers of wood came falling down. I felt someone grab me and pull me down as a piece of wood hit my head and I blacked out.

***

"Can you hear me? Are you okay?" I fluttered my eyes open to see a cute boy staring down at my face. I immediately got a faint blush on my face.

"I'm-I'm fine." I stammered out.

"Tiffany's gone to get an Apollo camper. But here's the thing: a pillar of wood- easily 20 pounds at the least-, hit you on the head but you survived. Without any blood. how?" I felt my forehead.

"I felt blood though." I thought back on the incident and remembered something cool trickling down my head. "Where is B?"

"Mariah!" I heard Tiffany call my name. she appeared with another camper "I'm Will." He came over and took my pulse. "What's your name?"

"Mariah."

"Who is the president?"

"Trump. Sadly." He did a few more tests and went on. "I think you got hit with a piece of plywood in a sensitive spot. You're fine though, I don't see any memory loss. If your head does hurt, come find me immediately." I nodded and got up. "Thanks, Will, and..." I looked at the boy.

"Damion." He smiled and I melted.

"Thanks." I walked out. I slowly went into a sprint and ran into the Athena cabin. "Where is B?" Annabeth turned her head.

"She's in the bathroom. She said that she ate something bad."

"Thanks," I spoke and went to the bathroom. I knocked on the door. "B?" Obviously, no response "Two knocks for yes, one for no. Are you okay?"

1 knock.

"Should I come in?" A pause. "B-"

Two Knocks. I opened the door slowly and saw B hunched over the toilet, coughing. "Oh my God, B." I closed the door and went to her.

"What-"

" A strawberry jam sandwich." She managed to sign. "Strawberries." She threw up again.

"B, I mean the truth."

She took a deep breath "The pillar fell." She signed "I tried getting you out of the way, but you got hit on the head." She stopped signing and hunched over the toilet again. "I don't know what I did, but I just pulsed." She looked at her hands. "And then your head was stitched and healed and- all that power-" She threw up. "Was too much."

"Oh, Gods, we really need to take you to the infirmary. You look like a sheet."

"Why doesn't the bathroom smell?" She asked.

"Magic. Stop avoiding the topic." I looked at B.

"I-, d- " she stood up and slumped over on me. She was thin, so I held her up with no effort.

"Oh, no, no, no." I held her up. "Don't faint on me now."

Barely breathing, I swung the door open, rattling the wall. "Mariah?" Annabeth walked over holding a pencil and paper. Her face contorted into worry. "Gods, is that B?" She ran over and dropping her things.

"I'm getting Chiron." A camper ran up out the door.

"Is there-" Annabeth started.

"She just fell, and I can barely find a pulse."

Annabeth's face went white as she pulled her hand away. "I can't find one either."

We looked at each other and ran outside. We bumped into Will, thankfully.

"What-"

"We can't find a pulse," I spoke as he put his head near her heart.

"It's very faint. We have to hurry." He sprinted towards the infirmary as we went after.

We ran in and saw Mary -the camper- talking to Chiron. He turned his head to us. Will begin yelling orders.

"We have to start her heart!" He yelled to us. He got a machine and pushed a few buttons. "Watch out!" He put it against her heart. She jolted up and gasped. Will sighed in relief.

"What happened?" Be signed. Her face whitened. "What did I do?"

"You're fine. Just relax."

"No. No, no no no. Stay away." She got up backed away.

"B. You have to lie down."

"Stay away!" She sobbed. "Stay away from me! Please." She shrunk onto the floor. "Stay away." Tears were water falling from her face. Will bed down and touched her arm. I came and gave her a hug. Her sobs quieted until I realize she had fallen asleep. I carried her onto the cot. When she was situated, I looked up at Will.

"She's malnourished." Will folded his arms. "Anybody can tell that. You can feel her ribs and see her bones jutting from her arms." I nodded. "She needs her rest though. Come see her in a few days."

"Thanks, Will." I went out with Annabeth. Her face was hardened into her thinking face. "What are you thinking about?"

"Poor girl. All of this on her first day." She spoke. We walked a bit. "When we were walking to the big house with B, Piper told me that Hazel said something." Annabeth paused "She said that B was powerful."

"How powerful?"

"Really powerful." I opened the door. "Whatever happens, she's going to leave a mark on camp."

Sorry bout the mistakes. I'm tired.
