"You can breathe underwater?" Sherlock clarified, gingerly touching the bruises near his ribs.
"Y-Yeah, I can."
Sherlock suddenly leaped upwards like a child on Christmas. "Let's test this, shall we?!"
And so they did. They made two signals. A frantic wave to show that Sam couldn't take it anymore, and a thumbs up to show that he was okay. He stayed underwater for two hours before showing the former, although it was more because he was losing stamina and was becoming exhausted keeping himself under.
Sherlock was smiling like a madman the whole time while he scribbled data into the dirt.
