Summer lovin' had me a blast
Summer lovin' happened so fast

A bonfire added heat to the already warm salty air. Alcohol in your veins, head in the clouds, you and your best friend danced around the smoking logs. You swung your head back laughing at some ridiculous story one of your friends told, the sand squishing under your bare feet. It was your last week together. After this, everyone was splitting ways: college, jobs, the military. The last summer with the people you spent your childhood with, was bound to be bittersweet, a perfect match to the vodka washing down your throat.

It was past the darkest time of night, right before dawn. The paling purple of the sky was magic. It felt surreal. Bodies piled around the ashen fire, on the steps of the beach house, various other places on the beach, and beside you, sat Liam.

"(Y/N)?" His voice spoke, groggy. You moved your head in reply. "I know we've decided on what to do, but I'm not okay with what we decided."

Before the trip, before summer concluded, the two of you decided to end your relationship. It wasn't practical to attempt to stay together when you were going to a college on the other side of the country.

"Liam-"

"No, listen to me. Those two years, were the best my life has ever been. And I know saying this is incredibly corny, but my life has been so much better with you in it. I can't do this without you in my life." His voice was slurred. He was still recovering from his drunken state. You were the same.

"Liam, Liam I promise you. I'm still going to be in your life, just not now. How about this. When we're twenty five, if we're both finished with school, and we aren't in any solid relationship, then we get married. Okay?"

Liam smiled, rolled his eyes, and held out his pinky finger to seal the promise.

A blend of conversation filled the air around you. A pretty young waitress led you to your table. She spoke in a friendly voice, informing you the gentleman meeting you had gone to the restroom to freshen up. You shifted uncomfortably in your seat, the black dress you had on was sliding up your legs. The musky scent of a familiar cologne drifted past your nose. Your heart skipped a beat.

"(Y/N)?"

You looked up, a matured face with the same mischievous eyes gazed back at you. Standing up, you pulled him into a tight hug.

"Liam."

He pulled out his chair and sat across from you. "It's been too long. How are you?"

"I've been doing really well. How is your business doing?" You asked, genuinely curious.

The last time you saw him was seven years ago, on the beaches of California, although you texted each other daily, and video chatted when you had the chance. That was for the first semester of college. After that, your friendship was pushed into the back of your mind, books and dorm parties coming first. Despite all of that, after college, you started talking again. It was as if nothing had changed. And of course, neither of you ever forgot your drunken promises. So when you turned twenty-five, finally catching up to Liam, you made plans to meet in person at some fancy restaurant whose Liam claimed was nothing short of heavenly. You drove three hours to where Liam lived now, New York City.

Nearing the end of the meal, your conversations had drifted to other things. The spark between the two of you had not changed, despite the bit of awkwardness at first, it reminded you of when the two of you were younger. Spending days upon days consecutively with the other, loving each other.

"(Y/N), you remember the promise we made to each other?" Liam asked.

"I don't think I could forget if I tried."

He pulled out a small black box, and your breath hitched.

"Whoa, wait, no Liam I don't think-" You didn't know what to do, but you didn't want him to go through with what he was doing.

"Relax, (Y/N), that's not what this is." He smiled, and opened the box. A sparkling silver ring, with a small glittering stone in the middle sparkled in front of you. "It's a promise ring. This is my way of asking you, if you would give me, us, a try again. We made a pact, and I was hoping we could try and attempt to keep it." Uncertainty laced his words, but he continued. "Every single year of college was hell without you, and when I thought I'd found someone, I realized they weren't you, and anyone that isn't you isn't for me. I still have feelings for you, and now that we're both settled adults, I want to see where these feelings could take us. That is, if you're willing?"

Your crinkled eyes sparkled almost as the stone on the ring did, "I didn't plan to break that promise back then, I don't now."
