Prologue

She wanted to believe she could fix everything, make it out alive and well, save everyone and have her normal, happy life back. Like a heroine in an adventure book. So she could smile once more and in return see her loved ones smile back. She hoped above all hope that she could live to see her adulthood, start a family and stare at a fully grown, beautiful woman in the mirror. But even as she sat curled up, darkness filling every inch of her vision and sweat pouring from every pore of her small body, a dark red fluid drying and flaking on her dress, she knew she was never going to win this. And that fact alone caused a black hole to open up in her, numbing her and rendering her immobile with a despair so deep it sucked every ounce of faith and the will to live that still clung to her by strands. She deserved this, she knew. She deserved every bit of her impending doom.

I just need more time, just a little more time.” She pleaded tearfully to what appeared to be the air, her teary eyes flicking to the tall brown grandfather clock that now seemed to loom ominously in the hallway.

She stifled her whimpering sobs, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes as if to push the tears back. But would it matter if she was heard? She highly doubted it, but at the same time, the weight of her terror wanted to crush her like a boulder at the thought of carelessly throwing her slim chance away in lieu of bawling like a newborn child. She just wished none of this had happened. Why did this have to happen? Why did this have to happen to her of all people? How could fate be so cruel to her? It wasn't as if she was a bad person…

“Please forgive me, I should've known-!” Her cries of grievance was cut off by her own choked-up sounds, uttering a noise similar to a cat being strangled. For she realized, upon taking in the wide streaks of blood smeared on the wall, who exactly was next. Her eyes widened, and she immediately fled the scene, running off with purpose and determination mixed with complete and utter horror.

No, she was a bad person. What good, sensible human being would make the same mistakes, choices, she did? Sure, she was very young, but even the most foolish of children would be appalled at her actions. Guilt unyieldingly pierced her heart, slashing it and cutting it open over and over, like a sadistic torturer was having a go at her. She deserved nothing short of that, she was all alone now, left to figure this mess out by herself. Loneliness is part of what lead to her cause this disaster.

“One more chance, give me one more chance!” She begged, eyes wild and crazed with desperation and ready to throw herself at his feet, kiss his shoes as pathetic as it sounded. He maintained a peaceful expression despite the blubbering mess before him, his smile looked so cold, why hadn't she noticed it before? “Please! I can't live with this! I need to make things right! Please.”

There was a saying she'd heard, about how it was never too late to right a wrong, especially if you're the one who caused it in the first place. Well, whoever said and believed that, was terribly terribly wrong. It could always be too late, not to mention when the stakes are high and the consequences of life or death are hanging over your head. One bad move and it was game over for you. She completely blamed herself for this. It wasn't his fault at all, as much as it may seem. She was the one who dug her own grave, and everyone else's. Her incessant trembling ceased as that numb feeling seeped into her, through her toes and to the tip of her head.

"I wish I never met you.” She pushed the traitor away from her, but would soon regret it.

The girl's eyelids grew heavy, her thoughts wandered and trailed off. How long had she been in there? Hours, perhaps? Was it over? Of course it wasn't. The past weeks had been so stressful, she'd barely gotten sleep recently, it was all too much for her to handle. She just wanted to wrap herself up in warm blankets and doze off in serenity. She allowed her eyelids to droop, then slide completely over her eyes. Her breathing grew less ragged and unsteady, evening itself out and escaping in silent puffs of air through her nose. Her tensed muscles relaxed, her body went limp, and her head rolled to the side, thumping softly against a hard surface. She dreamed of happiness, times long gone. Her descent into slumber had been as easy as slipping into a shallow pool, but it cost her.

She lost something very important when she woke up.

A/N: I had downloaded the game Hide and Seek again yesterday, and played it all over again. As always, it was fun, and it, coupled with these one shots, inspired me to write a book about Dorothy's adventures in purgatory. I'm busy writing and planning the book, which will obviously be called Hide and Seek: Story of Dorothy. I even found a new hint I hadn't read before. I don't want to lean on the game to write this too much, so anything in the game that wasn't explained, I'll probably explain it myself based on my own theories. I will take away some things, and add some things. (More hints, especially towards the back-story of Sue, etc.) This book will have "Parts," for each floor. The book would be extremely short if each chapter was dedicated to each floor and only had those events. What you just read is, obviously, the prologue. I just wanted to say to expect it soon, and check it out when it's published.

I'm not sure if I'll write the sequel next, I might if I get the game but it'll be harder due to some of the terrible translations.
