Game Over

Sue knew he'd get in trouble for this. It's just, well, he didn't really give a damn. Dorothy was his responsibility now, wasn't she? He was the one who had to test her for her sin, it was only fair since he lead her to commit it in the first place, caused her death, and it ended up being his job since he chose to sacrifice her and their entire family for said job. He was far from minding it, anyways, since he had more chances to play with the girl and interact with her, even if for most of the time she didn't know who he was and even if she was technically a spirit. He liked watching her struggle to solve the puzzles, how her mind worked when faced with certain situations, her reactions to regained pieces of her memories, her greed, and her panic when a monster tore down the halls in pursuit of her.

Oh, now was one of his favorite parts! Dorothy was coming to the end of the third floor, having wittingly lured the giant spider into the other room and treaded carefully across its webbing, which stretched over a cavernous hole in the floor, to a door on the other side. She entered the mirror room, where two large mirrors were hung on the far wall, surrounded by smaller and differently shaped versions of the shiny decorative items. This time, the twelve-year-old chose to break the one on the left, which allowed her access to the more luxurious bedroom. Unaware she was not alone, Dorothy read the diary on the table with unease creeping in her small frame, cogs turning inside her head as she processed the details of a new memory. Her head jerked up and her eyes snapped from the pages once she heard a quiet rustling noise, before spinning in the direction of the bed with an accusing, yet frightened stare.

Sue was almost proud. Her experiences had attained her a newfound, better sense of danger, she was now more cautious. Less trusting and naïve. He bit back his grin, seeing her black Mary Jane shoes approach the bed. Then her knees settling onto the lush red carpet. He could now see the pink skirt of her dress, the frills that always spun around her thighs. Dorothy, taking a deep breath and mustering as much courage as she could, yanked up the corner of the comforter. Premature speculation can lead to death, someone, she didn't remember who, had told her once, and so far she'd found that to be quite true. Thankfully, every time, she narrowly escaped the death fate wanted to ensure her. She thought she had expected anything to come out from underneath the bed, another oversized knife-wielding toy rabbit maybe, but a boy around her age eagerly crawling out caught her completely off guard.

The look on Dorothy's face was priceless. A mixture of shock, confusion, intrigue, the curiosity she was known for. She yelped and jumped back a bit, orange eyes roving over the sight of the well-dressed, raven-haired boy. “Who...who are you?” She squeaked. She'd never seen him before, he could be another creature, in disguise. But for some reason, the sight of him caused a nagging sensation in the back of her mind, as if he looked almost… familiar.

“You’re really good at this game.” Sue complemented with an amiable beam, ignoring her question. He almost snorted in amusement, since he knew the truth of that statement. “Is it my turn to seek this time?”

Dorothy only stared at him. Yes, his disheveled black fringes, smile, and slightly pale skin seemed awfully familiar, as well as his attire. She felt she's seen someone wear that same maroon blazer, bowtie, shorts, and button-up shirt combination. “I… I thought I was alone here.” She eventually murmured. She hated being alone. Perhaps this boy could tag along with her on her mission to find her parents?

“I'll give you ten seconds to hide.” Was Sue’s reply, his calm smile and polite demeanor unwavering. He then turned away from her, and strode up to one of the walls, before hiding his face against his crossed arms and counting down. “Ten… Nine… Eight…”

Dorothy suddenly jumped as if electrocuted, a jolt of horror striking her. The reason for this was because she suddenly remembered, on the first floor, when this horrific mess began, one of the framed paintings in the hallway outside her bedroom was mysteriously splattered with blood. Not only that, but the vermilion liquid formed the words, “Let's play Hide and Seek, Dorothy. You are it.” She'd screamed, a short high-pitched sound, before reading the message over and over again, wondering if she was having a vivid nightmare.

“Seven… Six… Five…”

But, worse things having happened now, Dorothy had recovered from the horror of that alone. What made her inaudibly gasp and suddenly become filled with dread, was the fact that this boy must have had something to do with that bloody message. It was a gut feeling that she completely trusted. This stranger acted as if they had been playing a game of Hide and Seek, which sent alarm bells going off inside her head, because it was no doubt linked to the painting. She hastily grasped the doorknob to her only exit, but the door was locked. This only seemed to confirm her suspicions. This boy had surely locked the door, without even touching it, he was not human, and she was trapped in the same room with him.

“Four… Three… Two…”

The bed? He was just under there, and she was paranoid another man-eating flower monster would be hiding with her. Behind the bookshelf? Moving it would make too much noise and give her away. Under the desk? She'd be too visible. The wardrobe! Of course! It'd perfectly conceal her. But… What was the point of hiding? Did she really want to partake in this game? Would he kill her if he found her? So many horrid possibilities ran through her head, dizzying her.

“One… Zero…” Sue slowly turned back around, expression eerily emotionless as he saw that Dorothy still stood, frozen, in the center of the room. She didn't hide. She hadn't hid. She was just gaping at him like a moron, shivering in her socks. Sue had not expected that, he fully expected her to choose the wardrobe, like she did during their last game… When she was alive and desperate to win everyone back. “...You didn't hide.” He said flatly, violet eyes boring into hers. It was funny, how that simple comment seemed to be filled with rage to her, when his tone was devoid of any feelings whatsoever.

“I… Don't know who you are.” Dorothy stammered, backing up a little. Her eyes darted to the side nervously. No. This wouldn't do. She was too cautious, so early on in their game. He wanted to restart.

“Game over. We'll start again.” Sue replied nonchalantly, shrugging. Dorothy gave him a quizzical look. Her silent question was answered when the door suddenly burst open, revealing the hairy, bulbous head of the enormous spider with piercing pairs of crimson orbs. She shrieked as it lunged forward, snatched her up with its spindly black legs, and retreated back into the room it came from, the door slamming behind them. While all of this had happened, Sue was casually standing there, thinking about the things he'd do differently next time around as bloodcurdling screams bounced off the walls nearby.

A/N: Okay, so I meant to post a chapter yesterday... I'm planning a Stranger fan fic with Gwyn, Priscilla, and Ai as well as a special chapter. So have this short chapter until then, I typed this up really late so I'm gonna hurry up and update....
