Chapter 37

Angeline glares out the window of her quarters at the thick layer of snow covering the training grounds, then issues a heavy sigh of hatred and loathing.  First of November, and they were now officially into the winter months.  Stupid snow.  What she wouldn’t give right now to be down in one of the natural hot-spring towns located at the southern-end of the country.  Soaking up the steaming mineral-waters while waiting for her next assignment… damned, stupid, lucky Hilda and Gawain… probably fouling the warm liquids with their own fluids… stupid damned rabid bunnies…

Snorting out a noise of annoyance, she whirls from the view, and starts to pace across the fairly-wide space that she was involuntarily cooped up in.  Unlike the cramped sleeping-rooms of the Candidate’s lodgings, the private quarters in the garrison made available to members of the Aegis and Order were nearly five times as large.  But it still felt far too bloody tiny for her likingEspecially since she’d been waiting for the past two damned hours

It was the day of Samuel’s decision.  His choice on the mage that he would accept as his Bond.  Ever since the interview process ended, he’d been out on little daily dates with each of the four women that were left in the running.  Her own early-evenings with him had been surprisingly fun.  They’d visited a number of shops, and eaten nice dinners, both in a restaurant and beside a pair of bonfires under the chilly night sky.  She’d actually forgotten at times that she was still in a competition… but it always came crashing back to her eventually… otherwise she would have felt rather… peaceful

Still… she was fairly confident about her chances.  The other women hadn’t gotten the opportunity to spend a full month with him before he came here… and no matter how that length of time ended, she was sure that it was an advantage.  And they’d gotten along fabulously since this whole thing began.  He was charming, open, sincere… or, basically the exact same person as when they had been travelling together.  And that realization had caused all of her old feelings to come rushing back.  In spades.  She was now spending most of her free time fantasizing about him, and their upcoming life together.  Of course… he had yet to tell her she’d won this little contest…

The golden-haired femme shuffles to a stop in the middle of the space, and pans her gaze around, looking for something to keep her mind off of her anxieties.  Regardless of her self-assured front-runner position, she was extremely nervous to find out whether or not she was correct.  The three others were really top-notch, both in their magical abilities, and in their personalities.  She’d grown up with Josephine and Laura… even looked up to them like sistersUma had been like a mother to herself, being a full ten years older… and each of the other girls had helped to lessen the impact of her fourteen years of confinement…

But now that they were all after the same thing, those old ties had been put on hold.  Each of them wanted to have Samuel as their mate, and she certainly wasn’t any different.  So it was all really up to him to make the correct decision as to whom he wanted to give his soul to.  Which would be herself, of course.  Obviously.  She was the only one that had any previous feelings of affection… and surely that would be the—
