Melanie's birthday was coming up

She was very excited

Mommy had let her have a birthday party

She had even promised the rest of the family would travel away for the weekend

So Melanie would have the party alone with her friends

She spent an afternoon writing birthday invitations

She firstly invited her old crush Johnny

She hadn't heard from him in a long time, but wished they could continue as friends

She then invited Angela and Bob

Lily and Rebecca

Dani and Felix

Steffie and Elliot

And then finally, Tyler and Josh

She was very proud of how the cards turned out

She had spent a lot of time on them, to get the cursive letters perfect

She hadn't spilled out the ink once

She went outside to the mailbox and mailed them

Some days later she got an answer

It was only one answer but it was enough

She didn't really care about the others

It was a phone call

The boy she was deeply in love with

"I'll be there"

She hadn't been this happy for a long time

Tyler would come to her party

If he brought her a present, she knew she would keep it for infinity

She looked forward to Saturday

And Saturday came

She had slept lightly

It's always hard to fall asleep the night before your birthday

She ran up the bed with a teddy in hand

Her family was in the middle of packing

"Happy birthday, honey" her mother greeted

She noticed she was stressed

"We're in a hurry, the train is arriving soon"

A quick box covered in messy white paper and a red band nonchalantly tied around it

"Good luck on your party, Melanie. Look in the living room, we have decorated it. We made vegetarian hamburgers and the cake is on the table"

Edwin messed around Melanie's hair "Happy whatever, silly sis"

"We will be back tomorrow"

And so they left

She ran into the living room

She was alone with pastel ribbons, helium balloons and cake with pink frosting
