The moon was full and bright
Melanie was never out at night
She told Tyler that she was scared of the dark
Tyler asked if she was scared of him
Melanie said no
Tyler was comforting her
He said that she should be scared of him
She wondered why
There was nothing threatening about him
He was just quite different
But so was she
And she wasn't scared of herself
"I'm only scared of the dark and the things I don't know"
"Then you should be terrified of me"
"Are you the dark?"
"Yes"
Melanie stayed silent
She didn't know what to respond
An owl was hooing
It felt like it was midnight
It probably was
"Why did you save me?"
He didn't look at her
"Why wouldn't I?"
"Because I'm not the girl to save. I'm the girl that should get bullied."
"But you look like a princess. In fairytales, the prince saves the princess."
Melanie scoffed
"I don't need no prince to save me"
She got up from the field they were sitting on
She walked away
Tyler was giggling
"You don't need me?"
"No," Melanie snapped "I don't need you"
"You will, Melanie!"
She shook her head
"Why did you want to meet again? And why in the middle of the night?"
Tyler shrugged
"I just moved here. Those kids at the playground were stupid. I barely have any friends"
"I don't have any friends and I've lived here my whole life"
"Then we can be friends"
"You will get tired of me and leave"
"I doubt that, princess"
"Don't call me that!"
He just laughed softly
They both knew that she loved being called princess
Even if she didn't admit it
Tyler already knew
