By the time I had made it back to the house, my muscles burned with the familiar ache of running. I hadn't been able to do it much in Seattle because my mother was always worried about me being out late in such a big city, but I loved to run there during the day.

I slipped off my shoes by the door and walked through the house to the kitchen where my mother was preparing something for dinner.

Opening the fridge, I pulled out a bottle of water before shutting the door and turning towards my mom. "What's for dinner?"

She looked over her shoulder at me before turning back to the pot on the stove. "Most of the kitchen things are still packed, but I ran to the store and bought a pack of pasta and some sauce. I know it's no gourmet meal, but I was hoping it would be fine for tonight and we could unpack more tomorrow?"

She seemed unsure whether I would be fine or not, but I gave her a reassuring smile. "That sounds great."

Once she was finished, she poured the pasta into a large bowl and placed it on the table. As we ate, we talked a bit about moving back to Brookville and just caught up with each other. I had always been pretty close with my mom, and it was nice to just sit down and talk with her.

After we finished eating, I helped her do the dishes. Well, help was a relative term. I'm not sure she really appreciated it when I splashed water at her, but we eventually got it all done.

After saying goodnight, we parted ways at the top of the stairs as we went to our respected rooms to get ready for bed.

I showered quickly to get rid of the sweat from running before getting dressed in some sweats and a t-shirt. I was exhausted from the events of that day, and I fell asleep almost as soon as I laid down.

I woke up a few hours later to a muffled rustling. I rubbed my eyes, kicking the blankets off my legs before checking the time on my phone.
