"I feel bad about this... Court is going to freak out when she wakes up."
"I know, but... we can't just act like none of this happened! He- He tried killing us!"
"I don't know, Ash... Do you really think that Josh could kill someone?"
"You saw what he did, Sam!"
"Yeah...I know."
God, my face hurts...
I let out a groan as I reached up to rub my temple, where most of the pain was at. There was a stinging pain around my left eye as well, but it wasn't that bad.
"I feel like I got hit by a car." I grumbled and pushed myself up into a sitting-position. I met Sam's pitiful gaze, but quickly broke eye contact. My eyes searched the dimly-lit room for the others -- Josh, Chris, and Mike.
"Um... Where are the guys?" I remembered how verbally agressive Mike had been towards Josh, and I couldn't help but to fear for Josh's safety.
Neither of the girls answered me, they only looked at eachother as if speaking telepathically. "Where's Josh?" My voice sounded panicked; I went to stand up, but Sam placed a hand on my shoulder and made me stay sitting.
"Well... I have some explaining to do."
~~~~~
"Why the hell would you let them do that?!" I ignored Sam's pleas for me to stay calm -- I was absolutely furious. "I can't believe it! You two, of all people -- I never would've thought that you could be so heartless." I shook my head after standing up from the cold floor. "He's our friend! Our FUCKING FRIEND!"
"Courtney, I'm sorry." Sam apologized, which shut me up.
"...what?"
"I said I'm sorry."
I wasn't sure why, but hearing those words made me start bawling. I just stood there in front of the two girls, tears streaming down my face.
"Court..." Sam reached out towards me, hesitance in her movements. My body flinched when she placed her hand on my arm. I let out a gasp, then reached up to cover my mouth as a sob wrecked its way out from my body.
"Th-They're just gonna l-leave him to die!" I whimpered inbetween sobs and hung my head in sadness. "I don't wa-want Josh to d-die!"
"Honey..." Sam pulled me into a hug; I tensed up, but made no effort to pull away. I just stayed there, crying onto her shoulder while a hand began to rub my back. I knew it was Ashley -- she rubbed in a vertical line, like most people, different from Sam who rubbed in a circular motion.
"I-I just..." My words were sputtered, due to my shaky breaths and sudden sobs. "I'm so wo-worried about him... I want- I want to be by his side... I don't understand, but -- I think..." I took in a deep breath, then let it out. After doing that a few more times, my breathing was more even and my body was calm. I took a step away from the two girls, and took another deep breath to help compose myself.
They're going to think I'm crazy-- after everything he's done...
"...I'm in love with Josh. So, even if you guys wont... I'm going to stay by his side, no matter what happens."
Just as I turned around to leave, I was unexpectedly faced with a wide-eyed Chris standing in the doorway. When our gazes met, his expression went stoic.
"You can't go, Courtney."
"I'm going whether you want me to or not." I calmly walked past him, though he suddenly grabbed my wrist which prevented me from going any further.
"You're not even wearing any shoes, Courtney. You'll get frostbite, and catch hypothermia or pnemonia." He shook his head. "Basically, you'll die before you can even get to him."
He might have been true, but he was beating around the bush, that much I could tell. There was something else he wasn't telling me. It was noticable -- probably just because I knew him so well.
"...then tell me, how is he? How is Josh?"
"He's fine."
"Bullshit, Chris. We both know that's a lie." I ripped my wrist from his grasp and narrowed my ashen-blue eyes at him. "Tell me the truth, or else I'll go see for myself -- of course, by what you've said, I'll die before I even get to find out." I put emphasis on the word die, knowing that I was hitting a weakspot -- he wasn't one to willingly put my life in danger, since he knew damn well that I would keep my word, even if it meant my life.
"Dammit, Courtney!" Chris shook his head. "He's not himself; he's not stable. I came back because I couldn't stand to see him like that anymore." He looked at me sympathetically, which made my stomach churn.
Don't look at me like that!
"I can help him, Chris. He trusts me! He knows that I understand him -- I understand his suffering." I glanced down at my grey low-cut socks, my mind trying to think of a way that I could get to Josh without risking my life. Asking Sam or Ashley for their shoes was an option, but despite my selfish want to see Josh, I didn't want to put them at risk.
It was when I thought about my shoes that something else popped into my mind -- I was no longer wearing Josh's beanie. There was a possibility that it had fallen off, or maybe he had taken it off earlier. For some reason, I had the urge to search the room for the missing items. And that's exactly what I did. I ignored the stares of my friends and brother as I walked around the room, checking everything -- any cabinents, drawers, boxes, etc.
"They have to be here somewhere..." I muttered to myself as I tore through another box, coming out empty-handed once again. Just when I was about to give up, I noticed something in the far left corner of the dimly-lit room. If it wasn't for a familliar shiny object, I never would've noticed it.
There was a table with camera equipment spread on top of it, nothing of any interest to me. However, there was a grey backpack lying beneath it. On the smallest front pocket of the bag there was a white, glossy pin that was reflecting the small amount of light in the room. Printed on the pin was bold black letters which read: MINE.
It was a lame pin, but it was definately important. As I pulled the bag out from under the table, I remembered the origin of the pin. A few years ago, Josh and I had gotten the same exact backpack. And since we hung out at eachothers houses, there were several times when we took the wrong backpack. After about the fifth or sixth time it happened, my backpack was returned to me with the pin on it. I didn't quite understand it then, thinking of the pin only as a way to tell our bags apart... but now, I realized why he had chose that specific pin.
Just as I suspected, the bag contained the missing items -- my shoes, and Josh's beanie.
"Bingo."
