"Well, it's definately creepy down here..." I sighed and watched as Josh walked past us, looking for something.
"Yep." He agreed as he checked a nearby fuse box. "Not a place to be on your own."
I decided to wander a bit, until my aights settled on a baseball bat. I picked it up and approached Josh, playfully swinging it around.
"Baseball in the snow, sounds fun." I grinned and gently tapped his arm with the bat, which he then took away.
"No, it wasn't in the winter, Silly. I mean, we'd come up in the summer and we would have the best time -- the whole family was there. Mom, dad..." He went quiet, eyeing the bat as thought of what to say. "...my sisters. It was some serious competition out there on the big lawn."
"Must've been really fun." I tried lightening the mood a little with a smile.
"I don't know." He glanced at me, then back down at the bat. "...can't go back." He placed the bat into a nearby box, and for some reason my mind tucked the thought aside for later, as if it was important somehow.
"New reality, right Court?" Josh looked at me expectantly, almost pleadingly, but I couldn't even utter a word.
"Anyway, I'm supposed to be fixing this old guy, right?" Josh laughed and changed the subject, obviously not comfortable with the talk of his previous life.
"Let's see..." He fiddled with some of the switches, and the room fell quiet.
"Here. Can -- Can you hold this?" Josh handed Sam the flashlight, and she shined it upon the cabinent. Just as I was about to go explore, there was the sound of crunching cement somewhere nearby.
"What was that?" I backed up a little, closer to the other two.
"What was what?" Josh looked up from his assignment in confusion.
Did he not hear it?
"Just shine it here so I can see what I'm doing."
With hesitance, Sam ignored the sound and shined the flashlight where it was needed. I, however, couldn't just ignore it.
Was someone down here with us?
"Nice one."
I glanced over my shoulder at the two as Josh stood up and walked over to a panel.
"First thing's first. We gotta inscrease the water pressure before we get the boiler fired up."
"Sounds kinda complicated."
"No, it's actually pretty simple." Josh chuckled and walked back over to the cabinet, leaving Sam at the panel. She turned some kind of switch, which made a machine turn on. A red light switched on a few seconds later, and she hit a button.
"Whoa!!" She stepped back a bit, and Josh chuckled.
"That's more like it!" He walked over and raised his hand. "Five, girl." Sam high-fived him with a small laugh.
Josh's gaze drifted to me for a moment and he flashed a smile, which I returned. He went back to shut the cabinet, then walked back over. Just as we were about to leave, a strange noise came from across the room.
"What the hell's that?" Sam looked around.
"That could be a lot of things..." Josh started, speaking slowly. "And none of them nice." His fingers crawled onto our shoulders in a creepy-manner, making Sam and I turn to face him.
"Quit it." She smacked away his hands.
"I'm just..." He chuckled. "I'm just "Joshing" ya'."
