Beomgyu had finally relaxed a little. He was still keeping Yeonjun at arm's length emotionally, but physically? He hadn't moved away when Yeonjun scooted an inch closer. That was progress.
They were now sharing a single cup of strawberry bingsu Yeonjun bought from a little vendor cart.
"You're eating all the mochi," Beomgyu grumbled.
"It's my love language," Yeonjun replied, chewing triumphantly.
Just then, a little boy waddled up to their bench, dragging a huge balloon behind him. His mom trailed a few feet back, distracted by her phone.
The kid blinked up at them.
"...Are you guys married?"
Beomgyu choked on ice.
Yeonjun beamed. "Not yet."
"NOT—" Beomgyu elbowed him hard. "He's kidding."
The kid tilted his head. "But you're sharing snacks and sitting close. That's what my dads do."
Yeonjun dramatically placed his hand over his chest. "Tell your dads they have exquisite taste."
The mom finally looked up, startled. "Oh—sorry! Honey, come here, don't bother the nice—uh—gentlemen."
"But they're in love!" the kid yelled back as he ran.
Beomgyu looked like he wanted to melt into the grass and disappear.
Yeonjun, on the other hand, was glowing.
"I didn't even pay that kid. Do you think that's a sign? From the universe? From the ducks?"
"Shut up," Beomgyu muttered, turning away.
But Yeonjun caught it—the tiny, flustered grin tugging at Beomgyu's lips as he dipped his spoon back into the bingsu, cheeks redder than the strawberry syrup.
Victory.
Small. Slightly premature.
But victory.
