I quickly got dressed and opened the door to Gilbert and Andrew. The former looked me up and down before raising his thumbs at Cadmael:

"Did you finally get to third base?"

I felt my whole face turn red while Cadmael couldn't help smirking. Andrew bent closer to Gilbert and whispered without really whispering:

"How did you know that it wasn't fourth base?"

Gilbert pointed at me:

"If they did have sex, my darling wouldn't be able to stand. Or maybe I miscalculated and Cadmael is tiny."

The latter raised his eyebrows and didn't feel like he needed to prove anything. Feeling the need to change the subject I quickly asked:

"Anyway..."

I couldn't say anymore because my voice cracked and Gilbert started laughing:

"Sounds like a rough night.

-AnYway. When dId yoU gEt hEre?"

Gilbert had trouble controlling his laughter.

"Sorry, we came straight here."

Cadmael crossed his arms:

"It sounds like this book is very precious to you.

-Wouldn't it be to anyone?

-But you aren't even the main character. Eschyle should be the one keeping it."

Gilbert looked around him anxiously:

"Do we have to speak about this here? They can hear us."

Cadmael and I exchanged a puzzled look:

"Who is they?"

Gilbert didn't answer and said something else:

"Come with me. I know a place."

We followed him outside of the castle and to his own house. Nature had started taking it back and we had to cut down some wines to get to the door. Gilbert took the keys out from under a stone and pushed the door open with a grunt:

"Come on in."

Andrew frowned:

"How is this safer?"

Cadmael rolled his eyes:

"The walls are made of Schrbyite."

I frowned:

"Cut from the world gemstone? Why do you need this in your home?

-It should be good now. They shouldn't be able to hear."

Gilbert suddenly stopped and looked up. All three of us did the same but we didn't see what Gilbert was looking at. Seeing me frown made Cadmael shrug.

"Why do I still feel that we are being watched?"

Gilbert hit the table

"Stop typing for three seconds, Lakhita!"

Seeing Gilbert's sight, Cadmael had trouble holding back his laughter.

"I guess it's too late now.

-What are you talking about?

-Nothing. So what did you want to know about the book?"

I took a deep breath:

"Gilbert, are you like me?"

My friend smiled brightly:

"I thought you would never find out.

-But... But how? When? What..."

Gilbert laughed:

"Is it that hard to imagine?

-But... How did you get here? Did you read the book or did someone tell you about it? Who were you? Do you want to go back?"

Gilbert laughed:

"I love the curiosity, I feel like a celebrity suddenly. Should I tell you or should I keep it a secret?"

He started rubbing his chin with a smile but he quickly answered:

"I died, obviously. I guess that's the way people travel these days.

-Oh... I'm sorry.

-It's okay, that's the one thing that happens to everyone."

Andrew cleared his throat:

"I am sorry to interrupt but could someone explain what is going on?"

Gilbert rolled his eyes:

"I told you that you shouldn't have come. You can't even put it together on your own.

-I'm sorry..."

Gilbert bit his lip before grumbling:

"Fine, I'll tell you because you are too slow on your own. The book that we came to find is this world."

Andrew frowned:

"I see.

-Do you?

-I... I'm sorry. Could you explain one last time?"

Gilbert laughed and when he realized he quickly covered his lips:

"We are living in a book.

-But... In the book that I read I never fell in love with you and I continued doing unspeakable things to you."

Gilbert pointed at me:

"That's because my book is not his book and it's not the original book either.

-I... See?"

Gilbert did a face palm.

"There is book A. Eschyle transmigrated into book A and changed the story. Then it became book B. I transmigrated into book B which we have in our possession and then it became book C.

-Oh... Wait! So... We are characters from a book?"

Cadmael sighed:

"I see why you ran away from him."

I nudged Cadmael's side and he raised his hands as if saying: "What have I said wrong? He's an idiot."

"It seems so.

-Why does no one look shocked?"

We exchanged a long look.

"You knew...

-Yeah.

-And aren't you angry? We are just characters on paper. We don't make our own choices. We are not free."

Gilbert frowned:

"What? Is loving me not your choice suddenly?"

Andrew quickly shook his head:

"I never said that!

-But you thought about it. That's good. You should make your own choice and stop loving me already.

-Never! I would love you even if it was fate! I swear!

-Oh really? And how do I know that it's not Lakhita talking?"

Andrew frowned:

"Who is Lakhita?"

I tapped Andrew's shoulder:

"If it makes you feel better, we don't know either.

-It doesn't. But thanks."

He turned back to Gilbert:

"Gilbert... I don't care who Lakhita is. Neither she or anyone has the power to control my heart."

Gilbert frowned:

"And how do you prove that?

-I don't love you in book B do I? Isn't that proof enough?"

Not knowing what to answer, Gilbert frowned:

"You made a mistake before. It's not your heart that makes you love, it's the hormones in your brain."
