chanceful meeting

"Come on, why isn't he here yet?" Y/N muttered under her breath, glancing at her conversation with her boyfriend, Jaehyuk. It was date night, and they were supposed to be having dinner together at this restaurant she reserved seats at, and he was running late. She had messaged him several times, and he read them but wasn't answering. What's worse was that the waitress had been reminding her to place her order. She kept asking for more time and explained that her boyfriend was running late. She was ready to pull her hair out from the embarrassment and anger she was feeling. She could feel the neighbouring tables throwing her sympathetic looks, and her cheeks burned. She quickly glanced back at the menu and pretended to flip through it just to avoid the watchful eye of the waitress, who was starting to get on her nerves. Y/N was starting to think that her boyfriend had stood her up, and the stares were getting to her. In frustration, she grabbed her purse and was just about to get up and leave the restaurant when a guy she had never seen before suddenly sat down before he explained loudly, "Sorry I'm late, babe, traffic is crazy right now." and he quietly adds, "I'm Kai, just go with it okay?" Y/N plastered a smile on her face and put a hand on his arm. "No worries babe, let's decide on what to eat." On the outside, Y/N looked natural and calm, but inside, she was completely freaking out. The stranger, Kai, was still playing along, his eyebrows scrunched up as he flipped through the menu. "Can I order for real? I'm kind of hungry right now," He confessed, giving a sheepish grin. Y/N couldn't help but smile and nod before whispering, "My treat." Kai shook his head, declining the offer, but Y/N nodded firmly, causing him to sigh in defeat.

After they ordered their meals and Y/N made sure to give the waitress a good, long glare, she sighed in relief and leaned back into the seat. Kai looked over to her, handing her a glass of water. "You good?" He asked and she shook her head. Her phone buzzed with an incoming message and she clicked on it to find that Jaehyuk only replied to her with a "working overtime today, can't make it." and felt her anger bubbling up again, shoving her phone in her bag, but not before typing the words "We're done." and blocking the number. Working overtime? More like going to the nightclub and getting all wasted as usual and throwing up once he gets home. On many occasions, Y/N even found lipstick stains on Jaehyuk's shirt but decided to bear with it, telling herself that her boyfriend was not cheating on her but she couldn't take it any longer. Tonight, whether he liked it or not, she was going to break up with him.

When she realized Kai was looking at her with a quizzical yet concerned look, she set her lips in a grim line. "He left me on read just now and now he says that he has to work overtime and wouldn't be able to make it. What an asshole. And it isn't the first time he stood me up with some unbelievable excuse. I bet I'll find him clubbing again." She grumbled, letting out another sigh, and taking a sip of water and almost spit it out just as fast. She suddenly felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her when she realized she hadn't even introduced herself or thanked Kai and she was already ranting to him about another guy and revealing her sad love life. "I'm sorry for ranting, I'm Y/N, thank you for saving me from this awkward situation." She said, mentally cringing at herself. Get yourself together Y/N! Stop embarrassing yourself in front of handsome strangers... At that thought, Y/N took a closer look at Kai, taking in his features, but not straight out staring in a creepy way of course.

The first thing she noticed were his eyes, how they seemed to hold stars in them no matter how cliché that was. Her eyes wandered to his nose and she couldn't help but find the bump on the bridge of it cute. He had high cheekbones and his lips were a deep red. He looked delicate, she thought, almost fairy-like. And his hair? His hair fell over his forehead in soft brown curls, somewhat like the fur of a poodle. When she was admiring his facial features, something peeking out of his bag caught her attention. As she stared at it for a while, she couldn't hold back a giggle that seemed to erupt from her throat. "What's so funny?" Kai asked, seeming genuinely confused about what Y/N was laughing about. She pointed to his bag and his eyes wandered to where she was pointing at. "Oh you were looking at Tobin?" He said, taking the fluffy object out. A small rabbit plushie sat in his arms, its fluffy white fur making it absolutely adorable. The cutest thing about it was the small carrot it held in its small paws and Y/N's heart melted at the plushie. "Tobin? It has a name?" She asked and Kai nodded before explaining, "I had it since I was young, and the thread got torn in some parts over time so I brought it to the soft toy hospital a few days ago to get it fixed up and went to collect it today." "Oh I see, Tobin is adorable." Y/N said, still looking at the rabbit plushie with affection clear in her eyes as it reminded her of her childhood.

The food was soon served as Y/N and Kai ate in silence, with the occasion awkward laughs in between. It was funny how they just met less than an hour ago but were already so comfortable with each other, even talking about themselves to each other. Y/N was grateful to Kai for his help and was subconsciously glancing towards him from time to time, only to realize that he was also looking at her. The two of them would blush and look the other way before the whole sequence repeated itself until their food was polished off.

"Are you going anywhere else after this?" Kai asked, grabbing his bag once they were ready to leave the place. "Not really, unless my 'reliable' boyfriend magically appears, which is clearly not going to happen." Y/N said, rolling her eyes. "So I take it that you're not busy then", Kai said and Y/N nodded. "Want to catch the meteor shower together? I heard there's one later on. I know a place perfect for viewing it." "Sure, I'd love to." They shared a smile and walked off shoulder to shoulder, and both of them could feel the restless butterflies in their stomachs.
