I thought Ashley was my first love. I'd admit it. I was dumb. I thought Ashley and I something special. I thought she was something special. The moment I met Demi though, I realized I was sadly mistaken.
I looked in the review mirror at Selena and Justin as they took shots of tequila in the back seat.
"Turn it up!" Selena said once a song they liked came on the radio. "This is a classic!" She said.
I turned the dial all the way up and listened as they turned my car into an episode of Carpool Karaoke.
I turned my head beside me and took a glance at Demi as she let the wind blow through her hair and fingers and felt the sunshine on her skin.

"I heard Jesus, he drank wine and I bet we'd get along just fine," Demi sang at the top of her lungs in unison with Selena.
I couldn't help but smile to myself because of how lucky I felt to know her. I knew I was meant to create something with her. Whether it was love or friendship. Anything. She was just too much of what I wanted. She wasn't afraid to be herself and she loved life, nature, and people. It was like a breath of fresh air looking at humanity in her face.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" She asked me giving me a weird look.

I smiled at her.
"No reason," I replied.
She nodded her head and went back to vibing.
I touched her leg with my fingertips gently.
"I hope you know that everything I do, I do with a purpose," I said to her.
I didn't expect her to know what I meant by that but I wanted to tell her that I didn't want to hurt her and that my intentions were good.
She smiled at me and leaned over onto my side of the car.
"Thanks for being so intentional," she whispered in my ear quietly before sitting back down and intertwining her fingers in mine.

I took a deep breath and hoped that she couldn't feel me shaking. I had goosebumps running down my neck as I thought about her cool breath in my ear. I had never had a woman make me this nervous before in my life.
I squeezed her hand.
"You know?" I said to her. "I feel like you're already half of me," I told her.
It was probably too soon to say such things. I hadn't even slept with the girl but I meant it. When I pursue something, I give it my all. She would be no exception.
"Is there anything you want to be now that you aren't?" I asked her.
She gave me a small smile and looked at me in the eyes.
"Happy," she replied simply.
The words broke me a bit. Here I was admiring how seemingly happy she was and how positively she impacted everyone else. I never expected that answer to come from her mouth.
"You will be," I promised her.
I broke our eye contact and began to focus on the road as she stared at the trees we passed as we made our way further and further south.
If happy was what she wanted to be then I was fully prepared to spend every moment of my life from that second on making sure she was.
I was falling in love with her.
I turned to catch one last glimpse of her taking in all that she could.
