XXVIII. Renouncing the Name Xuan-【玄命辞/Xuán Mìng Cí】

Start from the beginning

English

A young man with ambitions and a strong temperament
Seeking knowledge, how can one fear the bitter poverty?
No name on the golden roll of honor (1); trapped in the prison
Parents, fiancée and younger sister got killed, dying in vain

Unable to see the clear sun descending in the blue sky
Unable to see the tall shining mirror of my house
Who heard that the Heavenly Way (2) opened its eyes?
Redressing the injustices of my whole He family

Between cold dew of the morning and evening
Slaughtering all the tyrannical power
Discarding my lowly life
Punishing evil and spreading virtue
Red blood cold from exhaustion
Body died yet soul fights
My heart carrying much hatred and resentment
Who is willing to disappear in smoke?

Break though and arise from Tonglu mountain
Solely holding power over the ghost domain
Deep waters devour moving boats
Only crossing over to bury my parents' coffin
With the desire the Lord to be unlike me
Filial peity is hard to complete in life and death
Bereaved of parents in this world
Heaven and Earth are equally lonely

【Text】
Never dared to deliver my true intentions
But I was a young man with foolish eyes

Settling all my life's gratitude and grudges in a day
My voice cutting off from the mortal world

The evil one causes upheaval in the world
How are mortals and immortals different?
Extraordinary fate snatched away and switched
Changing life into a feminal one (3)
Changing my appearance to a new one
Enduring humiliation and hardships
Lying about a debt for hundred years
One day the turbid waves are turned over

Suddenly both the arms were severed
Wide sleeves gushing springs of blood
In a flash the skull hangs empty
Both eyes still open
Could not help myself from an early death
After death, fighting against the heavens
Kindness and hatred clearly separated
Why is it so difficult to be heartless? (4)

The whole family had been happy that day
Only remaining are my five bones on altar
Seeing each other from time to time
Hard to reunite from a long distance
Between the vast heaven and earth
My body alone in this pathos
There has been no one to come afterwards
Knowing my real name Xuan

【Text】
At the vermillion gate music and singing starts day and night
Hiding the sounds of buried bones before the mountain
How can the whole world be this unjust?
All the ghosts know hundred sufferings of the human world

TRANSLATOR'S NOTES:

🔹 '辞' (Cí) means to renounce, resign, give up, surrender or dismiss.

(1)- List of passing/successful candidates in the national examination
(2)- From a Taoist perspective, the Heavenly Way is 'natural law'. It is hence spontaneous, letting everything be what it is, or become what it can be naturally, without interference or influence.
(3)- He Xuan's female appearance; referring to Shi QingXuan's affect in his life
(4)- This line could also mean 'Why is it difficult to predict one's heart?'; both referring to He Xuan's conflicting feelings towards Shi QingXuan.
