Chapter XXIII

I screamed.

Christian convulsed, his fingers clawing at his throat as his life slipped through them.

We reached for each other, reaching for a thread to keep us together to the end.

Sickening gurgles escaped Christian as he tried to speak, his eyes flickering between vibrant amber and vulnerable greenish-brown.

"D-Don't leave me . . . please, Chris," God, I'm begging you. I don't want to be alone, not again. Don't make me say goodbye. Please! I cried through our severed link.

I love you.

My eyes snapped open, melancholy blue seeping through enraged red. Christian gazed into my colorful pools with tears raining down his cheeks.

He snuck into my life and stole my heart without me even knowing.

I let him take it in the end.

My heart lurched into my throat. His features relaxed; his beautiful amber eyes flickered into greenish-brown before they glazed over. I w-will always love you . . .

Bile rose in my throat. I swallowed hard. A wheezing gasp escaped me. I crawled to his side, forcing aside the hellish fire in my back as I shook his shoulders.

He didn't move.

"N-No, no, no. No, no! Christian!" I wailed harder than I ever had. "W-Wake up. P-please, Chris. Wake up!" I begged.

I love you, Christian.
