ATHENA AND REMUS' BIRTHDAYS FELL AT THE BEGINNING OF MARCH, Remus on the 10th and Athena on the 11th. Being born one day apart was something they always found rather funny considering how close they were, or how close they had been.
As her seventeenth approached, Athena couldn't help but remember it was this time last year that her and Remus had been fighting. Of course this was over something entirely different, finding out that Remus was a werewolf.
She wondered why time always cursed them this way. She couldn't be bothered to spend another birthday fighting with her best friend. Before last year they'd never fought at all which made her wonder what had changed.
Rena decided against getting the boy a birthday present. Seventeen was considered a highly important birthday in the wizarding world because it was then a witch or wizard would legally become of age.
This didn't mean a lot, they could drink legally now, buy drink and gamble if they wanted to. Mainly it just highlighted that they weren't kids anymore, something Athena didn't want to accept.
Unfortunately, due to the poor timing of birthdays. Athena and Remus were thrown a joint birthday party. She'd seen it coming, mainly because Lily warned her about it. Honestly, Athena didn't think it was that bad. Sure it had initially been rather awkward but in a heavily crowded common room, it was easy to avoid someone if you needed to.
The party was right up her street. Queen music playing ,of course, and a beautiful red velvet cake sat in the middle of one of the coffee tables. This was all Sirius and James' doing who also apologised for making it a joint party.
Athena thought that Remus looked more annoyed about it than she did. However she could barely read his emotions anymore. He didn't dance ,which wasn't unusual and he kept to himself which was also normal for him.
The one thing that Athena noticed was the fact that he drank a lot. Unlike Athena, Remus was not a light weight. He could drink about three large glasses of fire whiskey and still be ok.
However right now he was drinking cider by the bottle. Athena tried to not be concerned, it was his birthday after all. However she couldn't help but worry about what he was going through. What if something had happened to him? It's not as though he would tell her.
"Hey Sirius?" Athena tapped her friend on the shoulder. He was currently trying to flirt with another girl. Rena recognised her as being one of Alice Fortescue's friends. She looked over to Athena in surprise and immediately seemed affronted that she was interrupting her.
"I'm in the middle of something Rena" Sirius muttered, "what's up?"
"What's wrong with Remus?" She blurted out the question quickly as her eyes darted to look at her best friend who was collecting bottles on the table in front of him.
