She pulled into the parking lot, laughing and talking with her best friend. The laughter immediately stopped when her best friend saw his car.

They walked into the church, bracing themselves for the worst. But all they saw was him, sitting in the chair, clothes and hair rumpled, writing in a journal.

"Hey."

She immediately backed away as her best friend ran up to give him a hug. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know what to say.

And so she sat there for 45 minutes while they talked and ignored her.

But she was kind of ok with it. She saw the lines under his eyes, and noticed when he said he hadn't eaten or slept in days, and decided that his need to talk to her best friend was greater than her uncomfort.  She stopped looking at herself and focused it all on him.
