Chapter Eighteen

Darkness was everywhere. It filled every pore in my body, consuming me completely. But it didn't scare me. I was at peace. It felt like home.

I couldn't see anything at all. I looked around me, feeling indifferent. It was odd. I couldn't move, it felt as if I was bound to some strong support. I couldn't feel anything as if my body was numb.

Is this what happens after death?

I could see a light far away which was closing in. It was Veronica. She looked beautiful, glowing and peaceful.

Am I dead? What is this place?

"Is this a dream?" I asked her.

"No," she said giving me a sweet smile.

"Why are you here? Where are we?" I implored again.

"Evelyn, you were innocent. You didn't deserve to die the way you did," she started with a look of pity on her face.

"Am I dead?" I asked feeling exceedingly calm.

"Don’t worry. He will save you," she smiled at me again.

"Who?"

"Eric?" I asked trying to ignore the memories just one name brought to my mind.

"Yes. He knows he made a mistake. Give him a chance," she said.

"But I'm dead. I fell-" I said thinking back to how I fell.

"Don’t worry. There are more than a few things in this world and sometimes you can't find the answer to them all."

"I wanted to die," I told her.

"No one should ever want to die. But Evelyn I'm here to apologize to you," she said. I wondered if she was in heaven.

Where was I?

"Why?"

"I made a mistake. I lied to you about how those people needed help. They didn't. Derek knew about you. He knew you were coming. He wanted to get you. I should have never stopped you from going back," she said. I was surprised but I couldn't be angry at her.

"But when I failed to get you to him because Eric wouldn't let me he killed me," she said with a look of sadness on her face.

"Are you happy?" I asked her.

"Yes. I didn't have much to live for but you do," she smiled.

"But Eric-"

"I know what he did but I am sure he had a reason," she grinned at me.

"Veronica, is this real? Where are we?"

"This is happening inside your head," she said.

"So this isn't real?" I asked looking around again.

"If this is happening inside your head why shouldn't it be real?" she smirked at me.

"But I’m dead," I told her.

"I'm sorry Evelyn. Forgive me."

Those were the last words I heard before I felt myself vanish. I felt a tingling sensation in my head. It felt like there was pain but I didn't know where. A lot of memories and things and questions flew around in my mind.

It felt like everything would burst.

I sat up in bed, clutching my head as the pain filled my entire body. I looked around but I wasn't able to identify where I was. I was breathing hard but I felt hands close down on my arms. I pushed them away, frantically bringing up my knees to my chest. I was trembling hard and my breathing was hitched. I groaned twice.
