Chapter 60

First Meetings

"How could you ask her something like that and not tell me?" Ava yelled to Mason and Danny. After six days of bothering them nonstop about what they asked Mira, they finally broke down and told her. Ava was absolutely livid. She felt betrayed by her own parents. But strangely enough she did not find herself angry at Mira. God, she must love that girl.

"We weren't going to tell anyone until we knew for sure that she would say yes." Danny answered his daughter softly. He and Mason had expected her to be upset; they just thought they would handle it better.

"Since when am I 'anyone'? I'm your daughter and I had a right to know that you plan on adopting my best friend's baby!" Ava was hyped on anger. Her light brown eyes glared angrily at the two men who stood before her. Mason and Danny could not meet her gaze. "And how could you not ask my opinion about it? You don't know if I want a new little brother or sister!"

"You were ecstatic when we told you about adopting over a year ago!" Mason replied. Ava rolled her eyes.

"I was fifteen! And that was before I knew it could be Mira's baby!" Ava could not understand her parents' logic. How could someone keep a secret like this from their daughter?

"Well Mira's parents are coming over later so we can meet them." Danny delivered the blow softly, and then dove behind his partner in fear of Ava's reaction.

Thursday evening, Mira was lying on her bed flipping through magazines. It had been three days since Mira and Seth had fought the bullies. Zeke had threatened them both with bodily harm if they did not tell the principal what really happened. Reggie and Craig were suspended for two weeks. Seth and Mira were free of the charges that the bullies had accused them of. Audrey's angry rant had basically sent the principal into an early retirement, so Mira knew that he would not be bothering them.

"Mira, your father and I are leaving now!" Audrey yelled from down the stairs. The teen knew her parents were going to meet Ava's parents. She had wanted Seth to meet them, but he told her he just wasn't ready. Seth and Mira had decided that the adults should meet the family before they let them adopt their son or daughter.

"Bye!" she yelled back.

Ten minutes and two magazines later, Mira was bored. Her brother was out on a date with Jamie and Marli was over at Zack's house as usual. It was relatively early in the evening, and she had nothing to do. It was too snowy to take a walk, and there was nothing good on TV.

Resting her head back on the pillows, she looked over at Carrie, who was chewing happily on her tennis ball. Mira smiled and sat up, she was about a week away from entering her third trimester, and that thought really scared her. It was another month closer to giving birth.

She sat down at her desk and turned the computer on, she figured she might as well start that essay that was due in three weeks. She pulled a notebook out of a drawer and looked around for a pen. Mira opened a drawer on her left and frowned.

Her eyes widened as she realized that these were the books Paige had given her for Christmas. She had meant to return them to the bookstore, but so much had been going that the blonde had just stuffed them in a drawer and forgot about them.

She looked at the four covers in front of her and her frown deepened. There was really no reason to keep them. She did not need to know about being a teen mom; she was giving the baby up for adoption. Maybe the next book drive at the community center would like them.
