Chapter 57

Talks of the Future

Mira stared at the couple for a full two minutes before she could get her voice to work again.

"I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" she asked. Danny and Mason looked at each other.

"I said, 'would you consider letting us adopt the baby?'" Danny said. Mira's blue eyes still remained wide open and her jaw dropped.

"Um… I-I"

"We understand that this is a bit of a surprise." Mason said quickly.

"You could say that, yes." Mira answered while her face still lingered on shocked. She could barely believe this. She came over for dinner and ended up getting asked if they could be the ones she gave the baby too. Her mind could not wrap around the idea. All this time she had thought that the baby would be given to a complete stranger and she would never see him or her again.

"Let me explain." Mason began. "About a year ago, we decided that we wanted to adopt another child. We told Ava and she was thrilled. So we talked to an adoption agent."

"Very sweet lady" Danny added.

"Be quite, honey." Mason said to his partner before turning back to Mira. "Anyway, that was almost a year ago, and the agent said that it might take another two to three years before we get a child. And we don't want to wait that long."

"We can be a bit impatient." Danny said.

"Do I have to gag you?" Mason asked. Danny smirked and raised his eyebrows.

"Ooh, kinky." He said with a wink. Mason rolled his eyes.

"Then a few months ago, Ava said that she had made a friend who was pregnant and giving the baby up for adoption." Mason continued. "We've been talking it over since we found out, and decided we wanted to meet you."

By this time, Mira had managed to close her jaw, but her eyes still remained wide. "I… honestly don't know what to say."

"We figured this would be a surprise for you." Mason said patiently. "Which is why we would like to get to know you better: meet Seth and your parents. Maybe then you will see that we can be good candidates for adopting the baby."

Mira stared at them in wonder. Her mind was racing. Could this really be happening? Did this family be serious about adopting her baby?

At that moment, Ava returned from getting the coffee from the kitchen.

"Hey, what'd I miss?"

"So how do you feel about the adoption plan?" Jamie asked Seth. Seth shrugged his shoulders and pulled his packet of cigarettes out of his pocket. Jamie placed a hand on his arm and nodded her head at her son, then at the cigarettes. Seth sighed and put them back.

"It's what she wants." He answered simply. "She wants to give the baby to a family the minute it is born. She doesn't even want to see it or see if it is a girl or boy."

"That's not what I asked." Jamie replied. She took her son's hand and pulled him to her when he got too close to the street. "I asked how you feel about giving the baby up for adoption."

Seth shrugged again. "I don't know. I mean, I guess I'm ok with it."

"You guess?"

"Yeah, I guess." He said back tensely. This girl's curiosity was getting on his nerves. And he really wanted his cigarette. "Why?"

Now she shrugged. "Just curious. It seems like you have an opinion on the issue, you just don't want to say anything."

"You know, I don't really feel like talking about this." He interrupted. Looking around for something else to talk about, he settled on Luke. "So how old is the kid?"
