“Okay, but you have to answer this one. If you had to choose between the ability to fly and mind reading, which super power would you pick?”

I threw Lucas an incredulous look. “How is that question better than the last one?!”

He shrugged, “You have to answer!”

I sighed at the boy currently lying on my bed in my adopted room. We had gotten back from shopping about an hour ago, and Lucas seemed determined to annoy me. I was trying to unpack, and I’m not sure what he was trying to achieve, but asking me ridiculous questions while throwing a ball of socks into the air was what he was doing.

I began folding the jeans I had bought and stacking them on the shelves in the wardrobe. It felt nice to have my own clothes, and despite hating shopping, I had a minor post-shopping spree buzz.

“Um...definitely flying.”

Lucas propped himself up on his shoulders and looked at me. “Why?”

I cocked my head and stopped what I was doing. “I would love to have that kind of freedom, it would be so liberating. I could move at the speed of light, covered in a blanket of silence.” Just thinking of it made me sad that I wasn’t born with wings.

He smiled at me and wiped away a fake tear. “That’s beautiful.” I laughed and threw another pair of socks at his head.

He stopped short and stared at me in amazement. Being under his stare was one of the freakiest feelings I had ever experienced to be honest. It gave me the chills, but they were happy chills, if that makes sense. But I felt so small and warm? It was so hard to explain because I didn’t even understand it myself.

“Do that again.”

“What? Throw socks at your head?”

“No, laugh.”

I looked at him weirdly. “Er why?”

He jumped up and smiled the biggest smile I had ever seen. Grabbing my hand, he spun me around dance style.

I couldn’t help but laugh at his face and attempts at dancing. The smile on his face got wider and wider by the second, until I was scared it was going to split his face in half.

“Lucas, you’re crazy!” He stopped spinning me and stood there excitedly. I grinned at his arms, they were kind of moving around as if not sure what to do with them.

“What was all that about?”

“That was the first time I’ve seen you laugh properly.”

The butterflies jumped on their motorbikes in my stomach and began doing wheelies around my insides. He got that happy over me being happy? I couldn’t help but smile wider, which was ridiculous because I seemed to have forgotten that he was still my kidnapper and I was still his hostage.

Suddenly Lucas was so close to me. His fingers touched the corner of my mouth lightly, where my smile was stretching to. I tried to ignore the amazing feeling of his fingers but they just felt so darn good.

“You have the most gorgeous smile Charlotte.”

I lost the ability to talk as his finger traced down my cheek to the side of my neck. All I wanted to do was wrap my arms around him but the truth hit me.

I was scared.

I could blame my parents for never showing me what love was, or hot to love. I could blame myself for letting the confusion and frustration get to me. I could blame Lucas for kidnapping me, but then again I could also blame him for having such a fierce effect on me.

He was looking at me with that intense look, and I knew I couldn’t do that right then. I needed time, I needed answers. He kept telling me that they would come but they sure were taking their time!

But at least I was no longer scared of him hurting me. I was pretty certain that wouldn’t happen, but it still didn’t explain why I was kidnapped.

I scrunched my eyes up and took a step back. “I need to unpack,” I whispered.

There was silence for a moment before I heard shuffling. “Okay, whatever you need. I’ll see you for dinner.”

I nodded, unable to turn around and look at him, because I had no idea if I would be able to control myself.

“Oh and Charlotte, please stop worrying. You don’t need to be scared, I’ll look after you.”
