Chapter 13

Sophie:

A bright light was shining down on me, causing me to wake up. I blinked my eyes a couple times and sat up, wondering where I was.

I was sitting in a hospital bed, with my head pounding like crazy. Looking down, I realized I was in a gown, and my head had bandages around it. What was I doing here? What happened to me?

"Hello Ms. Anderson. I'm Dr. Flint. I'm glad to see you're awake."

A middle-aged looking man walked into the room, wearing a white doctor's outfit and holding a clipboard. He walked up to the monitor and studied it, then scribbled something on the clipboard.

"What happened?" I asked him. He looked over at me and smiled reassuringly.

"Well, when you fainted you hit your head on the corner of the front desk. That's what my report tells me, at least. You hit it pretty badly, too. You're lucky."

"Where's Justin?" I asked him, ignoring half of what he told me.

"Ah yes, Justin. He had to undergo serious surgery. Had the paramedics not gotten there sooner, it would've been too late. He would've bled out."

I sighed, frustrated. "Yes, but how is he?"

"He should be fine. We want to keep him in the hospital for another week or two. His stab wounds went deep, and we need to keep monitoring him."

I let go of the breath I didn't know I was holding. Justin was going to be okay. Tears started to escape from the corners of my eyes.

"Thank God," I whispered. He smiled at me and patted my shoulder.

"Would you like to see him? He's asked for you a few times. But we couldn't wake you, because-"

"You couldn't wake me?"

"You've been in a coma for the past two days, Sophia."

In a coma? For two days? Where were Naomi and Kodiak? I hope nothing bad happened to them, or I would never forgive myself. I kept telling myself they were safe, and that nothing happened to them. But... where did Ricky go?

"Can I please see him?" I asked.

"Of course you can. Follow me."

I got off of the hospital bed, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head, and walked down the hall with him. We walked to the elevators and got in. He pressed a button and we waited a few moments, and then walked out of them again.

The tile floor was cold on my feet, and I was shivering slightly. Dr. Flint led me into a room where I saw Justin. He was lying on a bed with his eyes closed. His head was wrapped up like mine, and he was hooked up to IV units.

Dr. Flint held his hand out to Justin, motioning for me to go over to him. I walked to the side of the hospital bed and touched Justin's cheek. It was warm and felt good on my fingertips.

"Justin," I whispered. I almost cried as his eyes slowly flickered open. He looked at me and smiled.

"You're awake," he said, smiling at me.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, tears escaping from my eyes.

"It's not your fault, Sophie."

I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him, then pulled back and kissed him. "I love you."

He rubbed my cheek softly with his finger, sending shivers up my spine. "I love you, too, Sophie." His eyes started to droop, and his breathing began to slow. He closed his eyes and dropped his hand from my face.

"He just took his antibiotics. It puts him in a deep sleep. He won't wake up for some time," Dr. Flint explained. "And you should probably get some sleep, too."

I kissed Justin's cheek one last time and stepped back. Dr. Flint escorted me back to my room, and then gave me two white pills.

"Take these. They'll help you sleep."

I did as he instructed, then sipped some water. "What's going to happen to him?" I asked.

"Well, like I said, we're going to keep him for another week or two to help him recover. As for you, Justin suggested we send you back to America as soon as you're ready to be released."

"And when will that be?" I felt my eyelids getting heavier every time I talked.

He finished writing on the clipboard and looked at me. "Tomorrow."

Tomorrow? Justin wants me to just leave him here? While he's in the hospital because of me? If he thinks I'm leaving, he's crazy.

"I hope he knows I'm not leaving." I fought to keep my eyes open as long as I could. The medicine began to take serious affect, causing my body to shut down.

"Well, actually, when the police came to get his statement yesterday, he asked that they escort you to the airport and made sure you got on the plane safely. Your stuff is over there." He pointed to the other side of the room, where my suitcase was lying on the floor, under the window.

"What... about... my dogs," I mumbled, forcing my eyes to stay open.

"Right now your dogs are being held at a shelter, under the utmost care. Tomorrow, they'll be brought to the airport and put on the plane."

"How do you... know where... they are?"

"I talked to a detective myself. He told me to pass on the information to you once you woke up."

"Will I even be... able to... fly?" I didn't think I could stay awake much longer. I kept fading out, only half listening to what he was telling me.

"During the time you've been asleep, your head injury has had enough time to heal. We'll take off the bandages tomorrow. You should be able to fly, though."

I wanted to ask him another question, but I found I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I finally drifted off to sleep, feeling the pain fade away.

I got off the plane, ignoring the slight throbbing echoing throughout my head. My mom and Darius waved to me, and I walked up to them and gave them hugs.

"Oh, Sophie! I knew I shouldn't have let you go to England! My poor baby," my mom said, hugging me tightly.

"Mom, I know you missed me and all, but I can't breathe," I said, only half-joking. She laughed through tears and stepped back. I gave Darius a hug and he took my bag for me.

The hospital contacted my mom and Darius after confirming I wouldn't be able to drive myself. My mom freaked out, like usual, and wanted to know if I was okay. There was still no sign of Ricky, but something told me he'd be back soon. Darius contacted the FBI and they have patrols guarding our house 24/7 like last time.

We walked down to the luggage claim and waited for my bag. When we went to get Naomi, my mom wasn't expecting Kodiak to be there. She looked at me questioningly, and I gave her an innocent smile.

"Oh yeah, did I mention Naomi has a friend?" I said, getting them out of the cages. Naomi and Kodiak licked my hands, then greeted my mom and Darius.

"He's beautiful, Sophie," Darius told me, kneeling down to pet Kodiak. Kodiak licked Darius's face and wagged his tail. Darius stood back up and said, "Yeah, I'm going to like him."

My mom laughed, and I managed a small chuckle. I wasn't in the mood to laugh. Justin made me leave for America, even after I begged to stay with him until he got better. He told me no and asked the police officers that were going to escort me to the airport to get me away. I felt hurt that he wanted me away, but I knew why he did it. I cried for most of the flight, and finally managed to stop when I realized I didn't want my mom to see me cry.

While driving home, I was in the back, in between Naomi and Kodiak. They were both lying down and had their heads on my lap. At some point, I fell asleep. The next thing I knew, I was in Darius's arms while he walked up the stairs. He laid me on my old bed and threw a blanket over me. Naomi and Kodiak both jumped up and laid down by my feet.

"Get some sleep, Sophie," he told me. I nodded, too tired to talk, and finally drifted off to sleep with both Naomi and Kodiak resting their heads on my legs.
