Hopeless

  • Dedicated to Angelo

To Angelo, a boy with his whole life ahead of him, but took it away by his own will.  Rest in peace.  You are missed.

I do not understand what your pain

Was

I never shall

I didn’t know you well

I admit, you sometimes scared me

But I knew you were a nice kid

Two people I love

Trusted you with all their hearts

They loved you

And you loved them too

I know you did

I saw it

You were hilarious

You smiled everywhere you went

You told jokes to complete strangers

You wore your military uniform to school

With pride and beaming lips

And sat with your best friend’s little sister at lunch

When she looked lonely

I don’t know what pushed you over the edge

I don’t know the details

I don’t want to

I’ve heard things

That I don’t want to believe

But now

You are a hero

Because you are dead

You are a thing:

A tragedy, is what they say

And it is tragic

That someone so young

With so much life

Potential

Greatness already inside of them

Could feel so broken

So tiredtiredtired

That they felt so empty

Hopeless

Why did you have to give up now?

You were so close

One more year

And you would have been free

To serve your country

The way you always wanted to

Fight for freedom

But you gave up…

And I don’t know why

I don’t want to

Because despair is a darkdarkdark place

Your pain is gone, now, though

I suppose

But I still don’t understand…

Just know

That no one ever hated you

You would have seen that today

If only you were here

To see it

I have posted the song on the side before, but I needed to do it again.  It is a song about brokenness but deciding to try and patch the pieces back together, and stand strong.  The artist, herself, has had struggles with self-harm in her own life.  We must raise awareness of self-harm and try to prevent suicide.  Because there is always help.  And death is not the way out.
