Center of the World

Always the tone of surprise

The look of disgust and astonishment

Wrapped up into one

How can she not realize

That when others are hurting

We cannot only think of ourselves

We must be willing to sacrifice for those we love

But she makes no sacrifices

Not even for herself

And that is why I wonder, sometimes,

Does she know what love it?

She will not hold a sick person’s hand to help them stand

She doesn’t want to see them “like that”

She will not pack food for the needy

The food smells “weird”

She will not give away her toys when they are past her time

They are still “hers”

She is not the one that matters now

Sometimes we must put others before ourselves

When will she realize that she is not the center of the world?

Is it for the attention?

Is it for herself?

I do not know

I do not want to know

Because I know that the answer would only sadden me more

And the sadness I feel for her is already too deep

Because she does not understand what love is

It seems she is incapable of caring for anyone but one other:

Herself
