Part 7

“Ok what are you two having problems with?” The counselor asked.

Truthfully I was positively terrified of the guy. The counselor had this crazy glint in his eyes and he was hugging some sort of puppet and was wearing pin-stripe pajamas.

“Erhm…we sort of got into this paint fight and we got sent to the principal’s office who sent us here.” I explained.

“Ah. Okay. I see.” The counselor said, scribbling on a note pad.

“Now, you are going to need to face each other, and I want you both to tell the other one how you feel.”

Seriously? Really? No, I refuse. I thought.

“Um, Sir, how is this going to help us?” Luca asked.

A small shiver ran through me. I hated myself for it. I hated the way that he had said ‘us’. But the thing I hated most was that I liked it.

“Just do it now.” The counselor coughed.

I wouldn’t do it. Nope. No way now how. I already had a detention…but so did Luca.

“Mia.” The counselor said.

“Yes?”

“C’mon. This will help you guys smooth out your problems.”

I sighed and turned to Luca.

“I hate the way you call me babydoll, I hate the way you play girls, and I hate the way that you keep messing with me when I don’t even know you.” I said and then strode smoothly out of the office.

I was walking back to my locker. The halls were deserted, everyone had left already. Then I saw Shane. He was sitting at my locker, waiting for me.

“Sorry about the basketball. Luca and I got into a fight…as you can see.” I said, gesturing down with my hands.

“I can see that and don’t sweat it…we can plan it for another time.” He smiled.

“Thanks. You know I barely even know you, yet you’re being so nice to me.” I said, unlocking my locker.

“ Well, you haven’t given me a reason to hate you or be mean to you.” He said.

I pulled out my stuff and I already had enough homework.

“Well, thanks for waiting…you didn’t have to do that.” I said.

“Mia, I don’t mind. I just wanted to make sure you were ok. Stella told me what happened.” He said.

We both strode down the hall, and I called my mom. The call went to voicemail.

“Hey Mom, I’m really sorry, I don’t know if you were waiting to pick me up or not, but I will explain later. Don’t worry, I’ve got a ride. Love you, bye.” I clicked the end button.

“Do you really have a ride?” Shane asked.

“No, but I didn’t want her to worry.” I smiled.

“Well, here you can ride home with me.” He said.

“Oh no. No, I’m a mess and I cant accept. I’ll walk.” I said.

Shane sighed and grabbed my hand. He started to pull me towards the doors but we heard a voice at the end of the hall.
“Mia!”

I about dropped dead. Luca stopped short when he saw Shane holding my hand.
“What?” I snapped.

I instantly regretted it when I saw the hurt look in his eyes. I softened my tone and repeated, “What?”

“I…um…nevermind. Just go.” He said and he turned around and started to walk away.
