*Beatrice's POV*
My mother laid out a plain white dress, the one she wore to her choosing. I picked out a blue ribbon to tie around my waist. I picked a rose for my hair, my signature look.
Today was my twin sister Charlotte and I's choosings. She has the oppisite of me, a blue dress the same as mine and a white ribbon. We've done this since we were kids. But after today we might never see eachother again. It would be sad, but hey. It's our destiny.
We head to town square for the choosings. Us and all other kids with March-May birthdays come today, the day after the election (AKA April 14). We stand in line, girl's in one and boys in the other. They prick our fingers and scan our anklets just to be sure we are old enough to be destined...
The first readings are on the screen.
"Kylie Mackrel and Paul Shepard are destined!"
Paul and Kylie walk up to the stage, and are given the shot in their arms. Their eyes turn green, and with that, they are married, given papers, and excused from the choosing. Kylie was one of my friends in Junior School, and it must be hard to be chosen first. Hmm.
A couple of the readings pass, and Charlotte and I are standing amongst the crowds. Guards are lined outside of the crowds, just to make sure we see it all. Sheesh.
One of the guards came over and dropped a girl my age in the crowd. She must have been late or something.
"God man chill chill! I'm here! Sheesh!! OMGEEEEE BEA WASSUP!" She called. Yep, it was my best friend Justice. She does whatever it takes to be against the system.
"HEY!" I called back. She ran over and gave me one of her bear hugs. The next choosing came up.
"Marvel Carmen and Riley Farmers are destined!!!"
"I hate life." I said, and Justice patted me on the back because she knew. And she was the only one that knew.
I was in love with that boy, even if I always said we were "just friends". I woke up this morning and wished I would be matched with him. But he would freak if he knew I liked him. At all. But even so, who says here's no chance of him liking me back.....
I snapped back into reality when I saw the next choosing. I was screaming in my head and I felt like disappearing into a black hole of nothingness.
"Beatrice Raymond and Drew Rally are destined!!"
