Loving Responsibility

“Obedience is easy when you know you’re guided by a God who never makes mistakes.”  Corrie Ten Boom

He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor.  1 Corinthians 3:8

Responsibility:  “moral, legal, or mental accountability”  Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Do you ever get tired?  Tired of errands?  Of cooking?  Cleaning?  Tired of running around trying to accomplish life?  I remember a song popular among my friends when I was in high-school entitled Responsibility by a band called MXPX.  The hook of the song went like this.  “Responsibility, what’s that?  Responsibility, not quite yet.”  And I remember phases in my life when that’s pretty much what I thought most of the time.  Stupid lawns and their stupid growing grasses.  Stupid bills.  Stupid responsibilities.  We all have them.  Well most of us anyway.  But what is our greatest responsibility?  Often times we create responsibilities for our lives that aren’t really all that vital.  In fact, many of them are damaging.  Most of us live in a culture that loves things.  We all want things.  That isn’t necessarily bad.  But at what cost do they come?  Do they come at the cost of too much or damaging responsibilities.  Responsibilities like working every weekend.  Responsibilities like balancing money and family.  Responsibilities like compromising values.  So what is responsibility, really?  It’s not what it takes to have the nicest things or the most money on the block.  It’s not what it takes to become someone’s boss.  And it’s not what it takes to achieve happiness.  However, there is one thing we’re all responsible for.  That is love.  The greatest two commandments state that we are responsible for loving God with all our hearts, souls, and minds; and our neighbors like ourselves.  So the next time we reject the responsibilities laid on us by the happenings of life, maybe we can look at them and wonder if they’re responsibilities we should have after all.  Maybe the responsibilities created by the things we desire are keeping us from fulfilling our greatest responsibility?  Maybe some of our so called responsibilities need to go?  Maybe we need to remember why we’re really here in the first place?  That is to share the love of Christ.  After all, He’s the founder of all love.  Let’s not tarnish it.
