(Since I'm deaf in one ear I decided to torture my highest kin✌️ this will be a mix of fluff and angst)
Dazais pov
Gunshots echoed threw the enclosed room I was in as my men fired apon an enemy mafia. I stood silent beside hirotosu until the last man dropped to the ground and was covered in his own blood.
I walked over to them calmly examining all the bodies to make sure they where dead. After I confirmed that there was no one else alive I moved back beside hirotosu and nodded for my men to leave the area.
When we left the building and went towards our vehicles we saw more cars approaching with bright flashing lights.
"Cops". I muttered and the men started firing at the cop cars. I ducked behind the car beside two of my men who where shooting a rain of bullets.
"Sir you should cover your ears"! One yelled to me over the noise of the loud bangs.
"I'll be fi-"!
There was a pain that shot threw my head like an explosion bursting threw my ears. I grasped the sides of my head and felt warm liquid deep out of my ears. It was quite but I was in so much pain. I couldn't hear anything.
I saw mouths moving but I couldn't hear the words coming from them.
Hirotosu ran over to me still taking cover behind the cars then tried talking to me but I couldn't hear him.
I felt his hands grab mine and pull them off my face but his eyes blow wide when he saw the blood falling down my face and blood that covered my hands.
I saw him mouth the words. "Are you ok"? Thank god for me being good at reading lips. I shook my head and shouted trying for both him and myself to hear my voice. "I can't hear anything"!
I felt him grab my arm and pull me to a car to rush me back to the mafia base and to Mori.
"He's deaf". I saw Mori say. "I don't know if there is anything to help him regain his hearing but I'll look. Till then he's just stuck".
My eyes widen at the news and I look down at my lap so I didn't have to see anymore. I couldn't hear. Could I ever regain my hearing.
After that I needed something to cheer me up so I went to bar lupin and saw my friends odasaku and ango".
"Oh dazai I didn't know you'd be coming". I saw ango mouth and oda nod.
I didn't speak and sat at the counter and archi handed me my drink.
I guess ango said something but I didn't notice until oda tapped my shoulder pointing at ango who looked concerned.
"Are you ok"?
I shook my head no. "I can't hear".
Both oda and ango looked shocked and I looked down at my lap. I should have listened to what the man said and cover my ears or at least we're ear plugs or something to protect myself. But I didn't.
I felt oda tap my shoulder again then when I looked up he made some sighs with his hands. I didn't understand sign language but I could recognize it when I see it.
He then mouthed to me. "I can teach you".
I nodded enthusiastically and we spent the next few hours learning. Ango stuck around so he could learn as well.
The memories of the day I lost my hearing still remained yet instead of making me sad they make me smile at the remembrance of my late best friend.
I was laying on the agency couch when I felt a harsh tug on my coat pulling me off the couch. I looked up seeing my partner mouthing angry words about how I shouldn't ignore him and get to work.
I didn't tell him or anyone else at the agency other then yasano and ranpo who found out on there own.
"Awww kunikida why so mean"? I don't know if I pronounce word's correctly anymore let alone what my own voice sounds like since I had forgotten I was just really blessed to have never forgotten how to read lips. I preferred sign language since I would know for sure what the person I'm speaking to was saying but since no one knew I was deaf no one spoke to me that way.
"Jesus dazai are you hard of hearing or something! I'm mean because you aren't listening and not doing your work"!
Be great if I could listen.
"My bad"! I smiled and sat down at my desk then worked hard on my reports(made paper airplanes out of them).
I didn't notice kunikida yelling until he slammed my paper airplane on my desk crumbling it in the process. When I glared at him I saw he had a glare back.
"Look I know you don't know how to actually listen but when I say something important like do your damn work! Do it"!
I whined and slunched back in my chair crossing my arms. "So mean".
Kunikida rolled his eyes then took my reports and tried to unfold them without messing them up to badly.
His back was turned to me and I saw his jaw moving meaning he was either speaking or chewing gum . I just wish I could hear if he was speaking or not.
I leaned my head on the desk where his hand was so my forehead was on his hand making him blush red and me smile. "Kunikida is like my work wife".
"I'm no wife of yours".
"Not yet"~
He hit me on top of my head making me whine again and pull my head off his hand and rubbing it.
I then felt a tap on my shoulder and say yasano who mouthed to me. "My office". I nodded and fallowed her.
Kunikida looked confused watching me leave so I shot him a reassuring smile before shutting the door. I sat on the bed and looked at yasano who started using sign language.
"Are you ever going to tell him"?
"Who"?
"Kunikida. You know he would get yelled at less if he just knew".
"It's more fun this way. I'm also scared if he knows I can't hear him he will stop trying to talk to me".
"He probably knows sign".
"I don't care. I won't tell him unless I need to".
Yasano sighed then started again.
"We'll i think I might have a solution for you".
"What is it"?
"There's a new surgery you can do at the hospital that's supposed to bring your hearing back. Of course you will never have great hearing but you should be able to at least hear voices".
My eyes widen and so does my smile.
"Really! Your not joking"!?
"I'm not".
"How do I get it".
"I can sign you up but you would be out of work for about a month and will probably have to wear hearing aids so people will find out".
"I don't care I want to hear again"!
"I'll sign you up then ".
"Thank you yasano! Your the best"!
"I know".
I practically jumped out of the chair in happiness. I was so excited I hugged yasano catching her off guard but making her laugh and pat my arm.
"Your welcome you big dork".
"Thank you again ! Love you"! I yelled and ran out the room. Kunikida saw me and asked what got me so happy. I was bouncing in one place and spoke "yasanos getting me signed up for surgery "!
"Surgery for what"!
"My ears of course! I'll be able to hear again"!
Suddenly I stopped jumping as I thought back to what I said. Wait maybe he wouldn't understand me. Maybe I spoke the words wrong and he couldn't tell what I said.
"You'll be able to hear again"?
Fuuuuuuuck
"Haha don't worry kunikidaaaa I'm going home now bye bye".
I felt him grab my arm and pull me to a hall no one was in.
"Your deaf"! He spoke and I sighed. I really messed up. We'll there goes my I won't tell him unless I have to.
I nodded. "That's why you think I ignore you all the time. It's because I don't know your speaking to me unless I'm looking at you". I explained with a frown.
"How can you tell what I say then"?
"I can read lips really well. I've always been able to".
Kunikida nodded then patted my head with a smile. "I'm glad you told me and I'm happy for you to get the surgery. I just wish you didn't hide this from me".
"I'm sorry".
He shook his head then pulled away from me. "I don't know why you didn't tell me but I'm sure you did for good reason so I can't be mad".
"I was just scared you wouldn't talk to me anymore if I told you since I can't hear anyway. I just feel like I would be lonely without you".
Kunikida nodded then smiled. "Don't worry I won't stop talking to you and I won't tell your secret. I enjoy talking to you too".
"You do? Even though I can't hear".
"Yep".
I smiled and hugged him. "Thank you kunikida". Then I pulled away smiling. "I need to go home now to get ready for the surgery since I'll have to stay home for a month after it".
"If you want during that month I can help you".
"That would be great"!
Kunikida agreed to help after the surgery and yasano got me set up. Kunikida waited for me in the hospital and when they allowed him to see me I smiled at him.
"Did it work? Can you hear me"?
"Your voice is really nice".
He smiled brightly and hugged me and I hugged back. "It is a bit loud though. It kinda hurts my head".
"That will happen you just have to get adjusted to hearing sounds again thus why you need to stay home for a month ". The doctor explained and I nodded.
"Thank you".
"Dazai". I heard kunikida whisper.
"Yes"?
"I love you".
My eyes widen and I smile. "I love you too"!
"I'll help you just please never hide from me again".
"Never again".
