Boden: "We work a dangerous job. We all knew that when we signed up. A firefighter dies in the line of duty, we are shocked. Our hearts are broken. But in some dark corner of our mind, we are bracing ourself for that possibility" he nods, picking up Jones' hat "But a firefighter takes her own life? That is not a contingency that we can prepare for. We can't change what happened. But we can learn from it. We all missed the signs here. And we can never let it happen again. So you reach out to each other. You be there for each other. Not just for today, or this week...always. I never want to see another member of this family slip through the cracks. Let's go to work." he nods, everybody taking a quick moment of silence
Kelly: "Let's go for a ride." he nods, tapping Ryan, Mills, Capp, and Tony on the shoulder
•
Mills: "This place isn't so bad. How's it working out for him?"
Kelly: "I don't know. I haven't checked up on him yet. I've been too busy. Boden's speech got me thinking...Bloom could use some more encouragement right about now." he nods, knocking on a door
Capp: "Severide..." he smirks, beginning to undo his pants
Ryan: "Seriously?" she scoffs
Capp: "Cheer him up" he shrugs, bending over "Come on, Mills."
Mills: "No, I'll pass."
Ryan: "You are a literal child." she shakes her head in disbelief
Kelly: "All right" he chuckles, knocking on the door "Room service!"
Woman: "Aah!" she screams, slamming the door shut as Capp's eyes widen in horror and he stands up straight
-
Kelly: "He was supposed to be in 109."
Woman: "Well, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Mr. Bloom checked himself out."
Kelly: "How long did he last?"
Woman: "About 12 hours into a 28-day program. I've seen worse." she shrugs as Kelly sighs, Ryan squeezing his shoulder in comfort when brushing past him
•
Matt: "Thanks for coming, Shay." he smiles, moving forward to pull her in a hug
Shay: "Yeah."
Matt: "Listen, before you say anything, I know. Seems a little weird seeing as how we're already married."
Shay: "It's not that-"
Matt: "It's just that things with Ryan and I haven't been perfect and we both sat down and agreed to wipe the slate clean. Start fresh. And I figured what better way of starting fresh than recommitting ourselves to each other. You know her 30th birthday is coming up and our anniversary a little after."
Shay: "Oh, yeah. Married 5 years, together for what? Almost 8?"
Matt: "Yeah. She never got the ring I wanted to give her and...in light of recent events, why wait? Tomorrow isn't guaranteed for anybody."
Shay: "Okay."
Matt: "You want to see 'em?" he smiles, motioning to the counter where a couple of rings are lined up
Shay: "Yeah" she nods "Oh, this one. That's Ryan right there."
Matt: "That was my pick. Back me up. That was my pick."
Woman: "That was his pick."
Shay: "It's really pretty." she breathes as he nods, clapping his hands
Matt: "I'm gonna do it." he declares
Woman: "I'll get one in her size. What is it?"
Matt: "Uh..." he trails off, giving Shay a panicked look
Shay: "I'm on the case."
•
Cruz: "Hey, roomie. Cable bill's due. Make with the cheddar."
Otis: "$140?"
Cruz: "Yeah. That includes the setup fee."
Otis: "Yeah. And your NFL package."
Cruz: "Your half is $70."
Mouch: "I haven't seen Clarke this morning. He still subbing over at 25?"
Ryan: "Clarke's not subbing out. He transferred."
Hermann: "What, just like that? No explanation? No good-bye? What a jerk."
Officer: "Gabriela Dawson?" he calls out, gaining everyone's attention
Ryan: "Oh, God, what'd you do this time?" she sighs, turning to give her a pointed look
Dawson: "Yeah?"
Officer: "This note was left behind for you in Rebecca Jones' apartment." he informs as a silence comes over the room
Dawson: "Why?"
Officer: "I wouldn't know." he shrugs, handing it to her
Dawson: "Why would she leave me a note?"
Matt: "Only one way to find out." he softly says as they watch her read it, walking out of the room after a moment
PA: "Engine 51, Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61. Fire. Grand and Ashland."
•
Matt: "Otis, make sure the pumps are shut down!" he orders as they arrive to a fire at a gas station "Everyone, get in there with extinguishers! Don't wait for 51!" he calls out as Ryan rushes towards a man flailing around on fire, tackling him to the ground while patting out the fire
Man: "You gotta get my wife! She's in the car!"
Matt: "We'll take care of her. Get out of here!"
Ryan: "Shay!" she calls out, motioning over to the man
Shay: "Got him, Ry."
Hermann: "All right, listen! She can't get out of here! She's in a full leg brace! Let's get this fire out!" he calls out as they begin putting out the fire
Man: "I got you, Janice! I got you!" he exclaims, rushing to the car
Dawson: "Sir, wait! Casey!"
Matt: "Hey! What are you doing?!" he calls out, watching as he backs the car up, hitting another car before driving forward which knocks out the gas pump attached to his car and the back catches on fire
All: "Stop!" they call out
Mouch: "Hey, get under the pickup!"
Matt: "It's okay. We got you. You're okay. We've got you." he assures, helping the woman out the car as Ryan moves over to the driver's side, grabbing hold of his shirt
Ryan: "What exactly was the plan, genius? Cause your car to blow up with you and your wife in it?!"
Matt: "Ryan!" he exclaims, shaking his head at her
Ryan: "Sir, please step out of the vehicle, and stand over there like you have a brain." she grits, giving him a hard look as he moves past her
•
Kelly: "Okay, you guys, pony up" he nods, setting a boot onto the squad table "I talked to Bloom's old battalion Chief in Denver, and I got an idea how to help him out. First step, we fill up this boot" he nods, scoffing at Capp "$5. Really? Okay, do you guys know the warehouse fire that derailed Bloom's career?"
Mills: "Yeah, ten guys got killed."
Kelly: "Because of a tough call he had to make."
Ryan: "He was the incident commander?"
Kelly: "That's right. Fire was in the structure. He had to give an order...no one else goes in. He made those guys stand there and listen to their brothers dying over the radio. They spit in his face, tried to go around him. He wrestled a few of them to the ground, and that's how he hurt his back. He was trying to protect them, but the way they saw it...he abandoned all those guys inside and got 'em all killed. That is a heavy weight for a man to carry around, don't you think?" he nods, looking towards Capp who shows his empty wallet "We can stop by the ATM."
Ryan: "Hey" she nods, motioning for him to follow her off to the side "Hey, I know why you're doing this, but this guy's gonna keep letting you down. You know that, right?"
Kelly: "Uh-huh."
Ryan: "But you're gonna try anyway."
Kelly: "When Jones first arrived at 51, I made it clear that I wasn't someone that she could come to for help. I thought she needed a little tough love."
Ryan: "You can't put that on yourself, Kelly. We all weren't the most welcoming."
Kelly: "I'm not. I-I didn't know where her head was at. But if Bloom goes into a tailspin, I can't claim that I didn't see it coming." he sighs as she gives him a soft look, handing him the money in her wallet
•
Matt: "Otis. I need you to clear out Jones' locker."
Otis: "Why me?"
Matt: "Well, you're the one with the box." he shrugs, walking out the room as Otis sighs, looking over at where Ryan enters the room
Otis: "Great."
Mills: "What is the big deal?"
Otis: "Hey, Ry?"
Ryan: "Hmm?"
Otis: "I got a favor to ask."
Ryan: "No."
Otis: "It has to do with Jones" he informs, making her give him her attention "We need to clear out her locker, but in the interest of "gender sensitivity," would you mind?"
Ryan: "Oh, for the love of..." she scoffs, snatching the box from his hands "You realize this might be the only chance you get at seeing a pair of women's underwear?"
Otis: "I owe you so much."
Ryan: "Whatever."
Hermann: "You're going to hell. You know that?"
Otis: "It's worth it."
Mills: "You guys just don't think that you owe Jones at least that much?"
Hermann: "What do you mean, we owe Jones?"
Mills: "Nothing. I'm gonna leave this here for a while. You guys do what you think is right, okay? Thanks."
•
Dawson: "I just...I wish she left behind some clue as to why she did it." she sighs, looking through a notebook from Jones' locker as Ryan and Shay begin emptying it
Ryan: "Oh, you mean, like a note?"
Dawson: "That note did not answer any questions. Trust me."
Shay: "Huh. She was in the class of 300. A lot older than she looked" she hums, glancing at Ryan's hand "I wonder what this ring would look like on a person."
Ryan: "Whoa. What the hell are you doing?!" she exclaims, jerking her hand away
Shay: "Okay, I'm just goofing around. Gosh" she sighs, holding her hands up in defense "Honestly, what do you expect to find?"
Dawson: "I just want to know how a girl as tough as Jones could let her father push her to the breaking point."
Ryan: "So it's all her dad's fault? Don't go down that rabbit hole, Dawson. Trying to find a rational explanation for an irrational act."
•
Matt: "You know how it is, Chief. Bunch of hard-ass firefighters avoiding real emotion at all costs."
Boden: "How are you holding up?"
Matt: "Not too bad. It helps to have someone to lean on."
Boden: "Yeah." he breathes
Matt: "Have you reconnected with Donna?"
Boden: "We are supposed to be talking about you." he nods, giving him a look
•
Mills: "Hey, Chaplain Orlovsky."
Chaplain: "Peter, good to see you, buddy."
Mills: "You too" he smiles, looking down at the box with Jones' stuff "My recipe book."
Chaplain: "Huh?"
Mills: "Uh, she needed a little help in that department."
Chaplain: "Ah" he nods, grabbing hold of the ring that falls out "Oh. Whoa."
Hermann: "Nice catch, padre."
Chaplain: "She was a bowler."
Mouch: "Who, Jones?"
Chaplain: "This is a 300 ring. She bowled a perfect game."
Mouch: "Whoa! She was a serious bowler. That is not how I would have guessed she spent her time."
Mills: "Hey, here's an idea. How about after shift, we all go out and bowl a couple of games, you know, in honor of Jones."
Otis: "Yeah, maybe."
Mills: "Man, you guys are cold." he scoffs
Hermann: "Why, 'cause we're not in a bowling mood?"
Mills: "No. You should've been nicer to her."
Cruz: "Whoa."
Hermann: "Excuse me?"
Mills: "I'm just saying that I know what it's like to be a candidate in this house, and that girl, she tried like hell. You guys wouldn't let her sit with the cool kids."
Hermann: "Hey, Mills, you trying to pin this on us?"
Mills: "No. No, that's not what I'm saying."
Hermann: "Then what are you saying?"
Ryan: "Mills! Severide wants to take another field trip." she informs, Mills staring at Hermann before shaking his head with a scoff, turning to walk out
Hermann: "Yeah. Yeah. Go on back to your Squad buddies!"
•
Kelly: "Hey, Bloom, you in there?" he calls out, knocking on the trailer door which creaks open a little "It's me, Kelly. I'm coming in."
Looking inside the trailer for a moment, Kelly perks up when hearing the sound of the truck horn honking. Stepping outside he looks over to where Bloom is seen running into a field
Kelly: "Bloom!" he calls out, turning to give the group an annoyed look "What the hell? You just sit there and watch him give me the slip?"
Ryan: "I honked" she shrugs, motioning towards Bloom "If you hurry now you might still be able to catch him. Doesn't look all that fast."
•
Matt: "Hey, you."
Ryan: "Mmh, hey." she smiles, rolling her eyes at Kelly who grumbles past the pair
Matt: "What's with him?"
Ryan: "Oh, he's just in a mood because he got ditched by Bloom. He'll get over it. He's just pouting."
Matt: "Huh. Okay."
Ryan: "Yeah."
Matt: "So, listen. I got us into RPM. They're booked, like, two months out but I charmed our way in two weeks from Saturday. So keep it free."
Ryan: "Ooh, nice. What are we celebrating?"
Matt: "What, uh, what do you mean?"
Ryan: "Why else would you go through all the trouble?" she chuckles, making him slowly release a breath of relief
Matt: "Just, uh, just wanting to spend a nice night together. Just you and me."
Ryan: "Alright, I'm there." she nods, pressing a kiss to his lips
•
Chaplain: "So, uh, what else can you guys tell me about Rebecca? I never had the pleasure of meeting her."
Cruz: "She was tall. Kind of funny sometimes." he shrugs
Chaplain: "Funny, like a...good sense of humor?"
Cruz: "Mm-hmm." he hums, standing from his seat to put his plate away
Chaplain: "So, Peter, you were teaching Rebecca how to cook?"
Mills: "I was trying to."
Chaplain: "So you two were friends?"
Mills: "Yeah. Yeah, we were."
Hermann: "They were bestest buddies."
Mouch: "Let it go, Herrmann."
Hermann: "He apologizes for what he said, I'll let it go."
•
Shay: "Look who it is. To what do we owe the honor?"
Clarke: "Just checkin' in on you guys. This whole thing with Jones, you know..."
Shay: "It's, uh, it's unbelievable, right?"
Clarke: "Unbelievable" he nods "I'm working with her oldest brother now, Brandon. And this poor guy's beside himself. That reminds me. From the guys at 25." he hands Kelly a roll of money
Kelly: "Hey. Awesome. Thank you, Clarke."
Dawson: "I hope Jones' brothers don't let their dad off too easy."
Ryan: "Gabby." she sighs, giving her a look
Dawson: "No, I don't care if it's inappropriate. I'm not gonna keep my mouth shut. Please tell me someone's taking him to task for what he did to Jones."
Boden: "Dawson, we were ready to go to bat for her. But it was up to her to stand up to him-"
Dawson: "He wore her down! Okay?" she exclaims, voice breaking "All she wanted out of life was to be a firefighter, and she did it despite his constant discouragement and-and interference. But he still had to take that away from her."
Clarke: "Look, all Brandon said about it was that she had depression her whole life."
Dawson: "Really?"
Clarke: "Apparently, she tried this once before, when she was 16."
Dawson: "And knowing that, he still bullied her? He still berated her, pushed her to the brink?"
Boden: "Dawson, we're talking about a Deputy District Chief."
Dawson: "Well, you'd better keep that man far away from me because if I see him, he's getting both barrels." she warns, storming out the room
•
Standing in the common room, Shay turns from facing the counter, looking over at where Ryan is asleep on the couch with her arm thrown over head. Eyes widening in thought she moves over to Mouch, ripping a small part of his newspaper
Mouch: "Hey-"
Shay: "Shh!" she quiets him, taking the pencil from his hands while moving over to Ryan
Looking up from the binder in front of him, Matt's eyes widen as he watches Shay cautiously wrap the paper around Ryan's finger. Shifting in her spot, Ryan grumbles, making Shay freeze in her spot, wincing a little. Mumbling to herself she turns over to face the couch as Shay lets out a small breath, standing up
Shay: "You're in business." she whispers, pointing to her finger, handing Matt the piece of paper as the two exchange a smile
•
PA: "Ambulance 61..."
•
Officer: "We got a driver pinned in the car, hurt but conscious."
Boden: "What about the bus?"
Officer: "Ah, kids on their way to the prom, banged up, but nothing too serious."
Boden: "Casey, Severide, we have a pin-in in the gray car. Get 'em out."
Kelly: "Copy that."
Boden: "Dawson, check on the victim. Shay, assess these kids."
Dawson: "Casey? We're good."
Matt: "All right, let's move this car. Ready? Lift! Ready? Lift! Ready? Lift!"
Girl: "I don't know where Paige is."
Shay: "Huh?"
Girl: "You guys, where's Paige?" she looks over at her group of friends who shrug their shoulders
Shay: "Mouch, Otis, check the bus. Sweetie, have a seat here. Where was she sitting?"
Girl: "I don't know. We were all goofing around, and... we hit something, and the bus started swerving, and that's when I hit my head."
Otis: "There's nobody else in here." he announces, after a moment, poking his head out through a window Mouch opens from the other side
Mouch: "Why is this window open?"
Otis: "Oh, no."
Mouch: "Chief! I think somebody was ejected!" he calls out, looking towards the line of cars
Girl: "Oh, my God."
Boden: "The girl could have fallen out wherever the bus first lost control. We are gonna shut down the road, run a search."
Officer: "My guys have been up and down this road. They didn't see anything."
Boden: "We should have some firefighters take a look."
Officer: "Look, be my guest, but I can't close this road."
Boden: "You do realize you have a girl that is unaccounted for."
Officer: "Yes, I do. But my guess is that she got out with the others, and she wandered off."
Boden: "You have an open emergency exit! Somebody was ejected!"
Matt: "Chief, let me talk to him."
Boden: "I'm shutting down this road!"
Officer: "I can't let you do that."
Boden: "Truck 81, block off this road."
Officer: "Last warning, Chief."
Matt: "Go ahead, Cruz." he nods, watching as Cruz drives the truck, stopping in front of the line of cars
Boden: "Mouch, Herrmann, Otis, fan out, search back along the road."
Officer: "This is my scene, Chief. Are you really gonna make me arrest you?"
Boden: "You know what? You're just gonna have to do what the hell you need to do" he shrugs, holding his arms out "Really?" he scoffs, watching as he pulls out a pair of handcuffs
Ryan: "You gotta be kidding me." she sighs, looking up from her spot at the gurney, gaining the others attention
Officer: "You picked the wrong cop to piss off."
Boden: "Oh, I haven't even started on you. You seeing this?"
Matt: "Yes, I am, Chief." he nods, grabbing hold of his hat as he's placed into the back of the car
Hermann: "I got her! I got her! We need a backboard, a black bag."
Mills: "Yeah, I'm on it."
Girl: "Is she okay?"
Shay: "She's in good hands. Just hold tight."
Matt: "Officer Woodall? Is this really the hill you want to die on?" he gives him a pointed look, motioning to where Boden sits
Mills: "Watch her arm."
Hermann: "I got it. Stay out of my way." he grits, giving him a hard look
Girl: "Paige!"
Paige: "I'm okay." she assures, slightly waving her hand
Matt: "Hey. No harm, no foul." he nods, handing Boden his hat back after he's released from the handcuffs
•
Hermann: "After you. I insist." he nods, motioning for Mills to go forward, making him scoff as he slams the truck door shut
Ryan: "Hey, whatever's going on between you two, you mind not taking it out on my truck? Just drop it already."
Hermann: "I'll drop it when he apologizes."
Mills: "Apologize for what? For speaking the truth?"
Matt: "Knock it off, both of you."
Hermann: "Yeah? He's saying that we made Jones suicidal, and I'm supposed to swallow that?"
Mills: "No! No! Just own up to your behavior and admit that you could have handled things better!"
Hermann: "How dare you!'
Kelly: "Herrmann!" he calls out, grabbing hold of him as he goes to attack Mills along with Matt
Matt: "Hey!"
Hermann: "I was the last one to see her alive! You think I didn't wonder over and over again what I might have done different, what else I might have said that would have changed her mind?"
Boden: "Is this what you all took from what I said this morning? Is this really how we're gonna get through this thing?"
Capp: "Severide? Bloom is inside."
Kelly: "Sorry, Chief. Got one more save to make tonight. Hey. See where those guys are."
Ryan: "Yeah." she nods, taking the phone from him
•
Bloom: "Well, I guess I'm gonna get a lecture about skipping out on rehab. Let's get it over with."
Kelly: "No, Bloom. I got no more lectures for you."
Bloom: "Yeah? Then give me my wallet."
Kelly: "Just relax. Ryan's getting it from my locker."
Bloom: "What are you all lookin' at?" he grits, turning to look at the others standing behind them "What, you need an audience?" he scoffs, taking a seat in front of Kelly "You ruined my white board. That was permanent ink."
Kelly: "I'll get you another one."
Boden: "What is this?"
Chaplain: "I know, I'm not staying. Severide asked me to pick up these two up at O'Hare."
Kelly: "Chaplain."
Chaplain: "Lieutenant. This is Damien, and this is Aaron." he introduces as Bloom turns away from them, shaking his head after a moment
Bloom: "Screw this."
Kelly: "Bloom, just give me one second."
Bloom: "You are a son of a bitch."
Damien: "Hey, it's not like that, Captain."
Bloom: "Oh, Captain! Captain. Aren't you cute? You can mail me my wallet."
Damien: "We didn't know what happened to you, Bloom."
Bloom: "Now you do."
Aaron: "We're sorry. That's what we came to tell you."
Damien: "The way we treated you back in Denver...well, you gotta understand, we were upset."
Bloom: "Oh, you were upset? You were upset? I was the captain. Those were my men in there! They were my men!"
Aaron: "We said a lot of awful things in the heat of the moment. But we had a lot of time to think about it. We were wrong. You made the right call."
Damien: "If you would have let us inside, we would've still been in there when the roof came down. There's no question, you saved our lives."
Aaron: "Your boy could only afford two plane tickets. Otherwise there would have been a dozen of us here. We all feel the same way." he assures, tears coming to Bloom's eyes
Damien: "This is my daughter, Lily. She wouldn't exist if you hadn't tackled me that day. 'Cause I was going in, Captain. I was going in." he nods, a solemn moment coming over the room
•
Matt: "Mmh. Smells delicious." he hums, entering the kitchen
Ryan: "Yeah? Here, taste" she smiles, holding a fork up to his mouth "Good?"
Matt: "Perfect." he assures, pressing a kiss to her lips as she hums
Ryan: "Thanks" she chuckles, noticing a piece of paper sitting on the counter "What's this?" she grabs it, looking down at the line drawn on it
Matt: "Oh, uh, nothing. Nothing" he shakes his head, pressing another kiss to her lips "How long til it's ready?"
Ryan: "Uh...about 30 minutes. Why?" she questions, squealing in surprise when he picks her up, carrying her down the hall
