Summary: After what happened in 3rd season, but the Byers didn't leave Hawkins.
3rd Person POV
Y/n couldn't help but stare at the clock in front of the class not listening to the teacher. Math was the worst subject for her and she was already warned she'd fail if she doesn't get a B on the last exam at least. That's the reason she's attending an extra class on her free time.
Troy behind her was tapping his pen on the back of her seat annoying her, he was just as desperated as her, but he was also a prick that adores messing with other people.
"For fuck's sakes, stop" She whispered turning around to look at him
"Or what?" Troy said in a challenge tone
"Or I swear I'll make sure everybody knows you have a tiny dick" Troy's evil smile faded at her comment and stopped tapping the pen
"Miss Wheeler" Y/n squeezed her eyes when she heard the teacher calling her
"Yes, Mr. Robinson?" She said turning around again and sliding down a little on her seat
"Would you like to share with the class what you were telling to your friend?" He asked adjusting his glasses
"This troll is not my friend" She replied offended pointing at Troy with her thumb
"Then why you weren't paying attention?"
"I was!"
"Really?... Well, can you solve this problem?" Said Mr. Robinson signalizing the exercise on the board
"If I can? Yeah, of course I can. Can you solve that problem?" Her answer made some of her classmates snort quietly
"I can"
"Very well, then shows us"
That only made the professor to walk towards her and put the chalk on her desk. Y/n sighed heavily and just when she was getting up someone entered the clasroom knocking the door.
"Excuse me, Mr. Robinson"
"What can I do for you, Maxine?" He offered his best smile at one of his best students
"I didn''t mean to interrupt your class but, uhm... We need Y/n at the auditorium right now"
The teacher looked at Y/n who raised her eyebrows "And why in this moment? Is that important?"
"She's part of the play Mrs. Baker is preparing for senior year" Said Max trying to sound convincing
"You play a roll?" Mr. Robinson turned to her
"I've got a main role" What a huge lie she just said
Mr. Robinson thought for a moment, maybe this was planned, but he trust Max, so he took the chalk and gave it to another student.
"All right Mr. Troy, is your lucky day" Troy's face was priceless when he heard his command "Go ahead, Y/n"
"Yeih!" She celebrated gaining a bad look from the teacher "I mean, 'nooo'"
"Get out before I change my mind"
"AsYouWish" She said fast taking her belongings and Max's hand to run out
Closing the door behind them, Y/n took a deep breath putting her hand on her chest and rearranging her backpack on her shoulder.
"It's like you knew I was in trouble" Thanked Y/n starting to walk to the hall not noticing she was still holding Max's hand "You saved my ass"
"As always" Smiled Max, but because she was touching her
"We have a special bond, baby girl" Joked Y/n but for Max wasn't a joke, she actually wanted that
"So, the main role, huh?" Said the blue-eyed trying not to get excited about that idea
"I was about to get it" She complained remembering the auditions last week for Alice in Wonderland "But Stacey and her charm bewitched the judges, ugh... What about you?"
"Nah, I gave up on the theater when I had to play a dancing tree and fell in front of everyone"
"That sounds fun" Joked Y/n making Max pull her hand as if she were saying 'shut up'. They were so close each other, Max couldn't believe that someone as beautiful as Y/n is a part of her life
Reaching the auditorium, the girls could see the boys already working. Lucas and Will were painting the scenery on the stage, Mike was sleeping near them, and Dustin...
""I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!" Acted Dustin wearing rabbit ears and showing a panicky behaviour, holding the script
"Bravooo!" Yelled Y/n clapping along with Max, both going up the stage as Dustin bowed
"It would be better if you were Alice. Working with Stacey is a nightmare" Said Henderson as the girls grabbed paint brushes to help Lucas and Will and saw Stacey being a brat with the staff
"I think Y/n would be the perfect Alice. Not only because she's talented, but because she's pretty" Elogied Max looking directly at her eyes
Making Y/n blush was one of the things Max enjoy, what get Y/n so red? The compliment? The person praising her?
"You're so cute" Replied Y/n pinching Max's cheek before getting up in search for more colors
Will noticed that interaction and the face Max put, it was like she was happy Y/n called her cute but at the same time dissapointed of the pinching.
"Still feeling the same?" Asked Will knowing Lucas wasn't paying any attention
"It's worst, every day it grows, I like her more than months ago. She's there, living like nothing cares while I'm trying to forget this feelings every night before going to sleep, just to dream with her" She replied seeing Y/n pranking a sleeping Mike
"Have you thought about telling her?"
"Many times, and I always imagine her saying she loves me too and we are happy together" Max pouted lowering her gaze
"Then go and tell her!"
"I can't. Because those are dreams, only dreams... In real life, she'd never feel the same for me"
It was very obvious that it hurt to say that, it was noticeable in her trembling voice and her gaze reflected a void that only one person could fill, but that person had no idea.
"Okay, everybody! Pay attention, please!" Shouted a professor, Mrs. Baker "Gather around, gather around"
Y/n stopped bothering her brother just in time, Mike woke up when she was positioning herself next to Max.
"I have an announcement" Clapped the woman excited "I know that this news will be a drastic change to our plans, but with the committee we have decided that it would be better if the work were... A musical. That means we're opening the auditions again"
"But Mrs. Baker, I already have the main role" Commented Stacey irking the rest
As some of the students were complaining and others were daydreaming about being a part of a musical, Y/n took Dustin by his shoulder "Dude, this is your chance! "
"You think so?"
"Y/n's right. I can't believe I'm about to tell you this, but you have a precious voice, Dustin" Added Max animating him to take the audition again
"Oh, what you know about it?" Asked Dustin to the redhead
Y/n and Max looked at each other like saying "You're thinking the same as me", so the smirk and started to tease him.
"♪♫Tuuuuurn aroooouuuund"
"Not again" Said Dustin putting his hand on his forehead
"Look at what you see-ee-ee-ee-ee♪♫" Max and Y/n sang holding invisible microphones
"Shut up, just shut up"
"♪♫In her faaace. The mirror of your dreeeeaaaams♪♫" Now they weren't only singing but also dancing caughting the attention of Mrs. Baker
"Very mature of you, seriously"
Appeared Lucas, Will and Mike joining the girls in a ridiculous dance "♪♫Make believe I'm everywheeere. Given in the liiiight♪♫"
"GET OVER IT!"
"♪♫Written on the pages is the answer to a never-ending stooooryyyyy. Aah-aah-aah-aah-aah♪♫"
"You all suck, you know that right?" Said Dustin seeing his friends laughing at him but claps distracted them
"That was beautiful! Was wonderful! Youuu" Mrs. Baker pointed at Y/n with her hand "Would you like to be Alice?"
"What?!" Y/n and Stacey shouted
"Well, I want you as Alice, of course you'd have to audition but I'm pretty sure you'd get the role" Y/n couldn't keep her mouth closed in disbelief while the team cheered her
"I can give it a shot" Y/n shrugged obtaining hurray from the party
"Excellent! What about you, Mayfield?"
As soon as she heard her surname she opened her eyes widely getting a red color to her cheeks.
"Me? No, I— I don't sing"
"You just did, darling" Said the professor
Max felt overwhelmed for a couple of seconds, but looking at Y/n relaxed her, as if she was her antidote to any bad thing "Do it with me, please?"
Was it an opportunity to spend more time with her? Having more things in common perhaps. Besides, the was she's asked using that sweet tone of voice and grabbing her arm was enough to make Max fall after anything.
"You can count on me" Her response caused a huge grin on Y/n
"But, Mrs. Bak—" Stacey tried to say
"This is excellent! Oh and if Dustin is as good as you claim..." Mrs. Baker turned to Dustin "I think you can get something better, maybe the Mad Hatter, suits better on you"
The three teenagers were amazed at what just happened, celebrating quietly.
"As for you" The professor refered to Will, Mike and Lucas, those three expecting something as good "... You can be the trees"
The rest of the team snorted at her comment "Although I liked that you took the initiative to want to be Cheshire" Said the teacher pointing at Mike's face
"Cheshire?" He asked confused
"The cat in Alice in Wonderland" Yet, Mike didn't get it so the woman signalized his entire face "Anyway, see you three at the auditions"
Mrs. Baker was followed by a pair of students receiving complains and ideas at the same time, while Mike ran to see his face in the bathroom mirrors.
"I can't believe you convince me to do this" Max hit Y/n's arm using her fist but without hurting her
"Admit it, deep inside you wanted to be part of the play" Max rolled her eyes shaking her head "C'mon, it will be fun!"
Y/n grabbed Max's hands and started to dance softly but in a witty way, humming Dustin's song and then both singing without raising their voices, as if it were just the two of them. That's how Max felt it.
"I'M GONNA KILL YOU!" Mike screeched chasing Y/n
"Fuck!"
Y/n started to run all around the auditorium. The thing is moments ago, when Mike was sleeping, she painted him a cat face, whiskers, a tongue below his lip and ears above the eyebrows.
Y/n ran towards Max using her as a shield.
"He is a psycho, help me!"
"I'm telling mom!" Said Mike trying to catch her having Max in the middle
"Ow, the baby needs his mommy?"
"You should respect me! I'm older than you"
"For seven minutes only!"
"STOOOOOP!" Yelled Max but they didn't listen to her and kept going
Still, hearing Y/n's laughter was like music for Max, seeing her smile was like seeing a work of art, feeling her hands on her waist was the closest she ever had in terms of touch, wanting to feel her hands there more often, hugging her, saying words of love.
Y/n was focused on not getting caught by her brother, she doesn't know what's going on in Max's head or what her heart feels for her.
And so it would stay, like a secret, Max may be capable of many things but never tell Y/n that she loves her.
She didn't want to lose her.
