Sylvie's POV
It's been 4 years since Matt and I started dating. 4 years ago this exact weekend I asked matt to come home with me to the Fowlerton Fair. Well actually my mother kinda made me ask him. And I'm glad she pushed me to ask him. That weekend 4 years ago I got sick. Matt took care of me all night. Didn't hesitate at all. He jumped right in to take care of me. If he can do that when we were just friends. I know we can get through anything. He my rock. I'm sitting on my bunk when my phone goes off. "Hey mom!" I say excitedly. "Hey honey. What time are you guys planning on leaving" she asks me "we are leaving straight after shift tomorrow morning. So around 9 am providing we don't get a last minute call." I say. "Great I'll have your dad cook something on the grill before we head out to the fair or we could eat there. Up to you." She says. "Um dad can cook lunch and we will have dinner at the fair" I say. "Great I'll let him know. I got to go into town now so tell Matt I say hi and that we will see you guys tomorrow." She says. "Will do love you see you tomorrow." I say as I hang up the phone. I see matt working on paperwork in his off and walk over to him. "Saw you on the phone was that your folks." He asks me "yeah my mom she says hi." I say "what did she want" he asks me. "Oh she was just wondering what time we were leaving tomorrow." I say "I'm excited for this weekend" Matt says as he gets up from his desk chair. "Oh yeah me too." I say "was thinking corn dogs for dinner" he says will a smirk on his face. "Yeah no that's. Not even funny." I say playfully slapping him. On my second slap he pulls my in closer by my waist. "Have I ever told you how happy I am that you invited me to go with you 4 years ago?" He says "I'm drawing a blank maybe you can refresh memory." I say reaching up on my tip toes so our noses are touching. "I think I can manage that" he says lowering his lips to mine. "Remember now?" He asks "might need another reminder. Still all little foggy" I say smirking against his lips. "How's this?" He says leaning down kissing me again with a little bit more passion this time. "Oh now I remember" I say smiling ear to ear. "I was thinking we should..." He starts to say but the bells go off for Ambo 61. "Ambo 61 man down unknown cause 2847 west Racine Dr." "Got to go." I say turning out if his arms. "Be safe" he says giving me one last peck. "Always" I say as ran out to the rig.
Casey's POV.
Ambo 61 had just got called out on a call. It was the perfect time to call her folks. I pull out my phone and dial her Fathers number. "Matt everything okay? What can I do for you?" He says as he picks up the call. "Oh everything is fine. I was actually calling to ask you about something. For this weekend." I say nervously. "Sure what did you need to ask?" He says to me. "Well it's not a conversation I would like to have over the phone been wondering if I'd be able to chat with you while you are grilling lunch tomorrow." I say. "Sound perfect to me. And if it's what I think this conversation is. You already know it's a yes." He says which makes me smile. "Still wanna do it the right way sir." I say "that I can respect. One thing I love about you." Neil says. "Thank you. We will see tomorrow." I say hang up the phone. I reach into the top drawer of my desk and pull out a black velvet box. I open and stare at the contents of the box. I can t help but smile. I hear noise and quickly put it back. "It's okay case it's just me. Was that what I think it is" Severide says "yeah I'm plan on asking her this weekend. I've got it all planned out." I say. "Well congratulations man I'm happy for you" he says "thanks man oh don't tell Stella I don't want her accidentally telling Sylvie anything." I say "my lips are sealed" Severide says as he leaves my office.
Sylvie's POV
Shift was just ending. I was so happy we didn't get a last minute call. It would have made us late for our trip down to the Fowlerton Fair. I finish packing up my locker and head to Matt's office. "Hey ready to go?" I ask as I knock on his door. "Yeah all set." He says with a smile. He grabs his bag off his bunk, to throws it over his shoulder and takes my hand in his. "Have fun you too" Severide says as we walk down the apron to my car. "Mind if I drive. I know you were up late with multiple calls." Matt says. "I would love if you would drive. I could at least get an hour or two of sleep. Thank you" I say handing over the keys. "Welcome" he says leaning down to kiss me. The second I get settled in the car I fall asleep. About Two hours later I wake up. "Hey, have a good snooze." Matt asks me. "Yeah it was well needed that 3am call was a long one. Now I'm well rested for the fair." I say "well that's great. We need all the energy to do everything" he says. It takes us about another hour to get to the farm house. "Mom and dad it's so good to see you" I say hoping out of the car. "Same here sweetie" mom says "good to see you Matt" Neil says with a smile. "Come on in your dad was just about to start up the grill." Martha says. "Come on let's go put our bags up." I say leading Matt up stairs. We reach my old bedroom and matt walks in first. "Oh score more pictures." Matt says with excitement. "What urg mother did it again?" I say "yep she did" he says. "What one you got now?" I ask him as I walk to where he is standing. "This one is you in a baseball uniform." He says "ah yes I was about 6 or 7 in this picture. I was one of two girls on the team. And I out batted every single boy there." I say "I wouldn't doubt it." He says turning to smile at me. "Oh I found another one" he says "more man come on mom." I say "this one looks to be high school" he says. "Yep that was high school Marching band. I was in color guard. I wanted to spin everything. So my parents thought it would be a good idea to put me in guard. I still might have my flag around the house somewhere." I say with a smile. We finished putting our stuff away and head downstairs. "Hey I'm gonna go help your dad with the grill. I'll be back in a bit" Matt says to me. "Alright have fun" I say.
Casey's POV
I see Neil walk out to start the grill. It was the perfect time to talk to him about what I wanted to ask him. I told Sylvie I would be out helping her dad with the grill if she needed me. "Matt give me a hand and fill up the charcoal while I wash the grill" Neil says. "Sure thing" I say as I lift the bag up. "So I hear there's something special you wanna ask me" Neil says. As he puts the burgers on the grill. "As you know your daughter is the most important person in my life. She is my rock as I hers. We lift each other up during the hard times. I can't imagine a life without her. I know she will always be your little farm girl. But I would really love your permission to marry your daughter." I say "it would be an honor to have you join our family. I know Sylvie loves you very much. It's the happiest I've ever seen her. Welcome to the family" he says shaking my hand. "Thank you sir this means the world to me." I say with a smile "so when do you plan on asking her?" He asks me. "Well if all go well I was hoping this weekend. Exactly 4 years after we started dating. I wanna ask her on the Ferris wheel. With the lights and fireworks all around us." I say. "She will absolutely love that" he says. "That's what I'm hoping for" I say looking in the window to find Sylvie helping out her mom. After lunch we head to the fair. "So have a good time with my dad out grilling?" She asked me as we arrived at the fair. "Yeah it was great." I say with a smile. "So I was thinking they added a new ride this year the tornado. Wanna try it. It's a fast one." she says. "Sure then we could do the tilt a whirl" I say. "Sound good" she says. We ride both rides twice. "So what one do you like better?" She asks. "The tornado was an interesting ride. Not one of my favorites but still good. I think I prefer the tilt a whirl." I say as we stepped off the tilt a whirl. "Hey what do you think of doing this one it's called the zipper?" She asks me. We stand watching what it does. "Woo um not really my taste" it flips you upside down and all around no thank you. But you are more than welcome to ride it." I say. "Nah I'd rather go on rides with both of us." She says. We ride the tea cups next. It's her favorite ride. After that we stop and get food. For dinner. "Jimmy's smoked BBQ the best fried corn" she says all excitedly. We eat our meal and chat a bit about the weekend. "I was thinking once done eating. We could go see a show then do the potato sack slide." I say "as long as you don't mind getting beat the 4th year in a row." She teases "hey I'm learning the technique. Never know I may beat you this year." I say. "Ha-ha I. Your dreams." She says. She ends up beating me again. "How in the world" I say in disbelief. "Maybe I'll teach you" she teases. We hang around the fair a few more hours before it starts getting late.
Sylvie's POV.
"This was a great day" I say. As we reach the bedroom we are staying in. "Tomorrow will be even better" he says with a smile. "What makes you say that?" I ask as we start getting ready for bed. "Well for one it's the fireworks show and I know how much you love it." He says "that is true I do love the show." I say crawling into bed next to Matt. I was just about to lay my head down on him when he pops up on his elbow. "You don't plan on n getting sick do you" he asks teasing me. "Ha-ha very funny. Do you have to ask that every year?" I say. "Just making sure. I want this to be the perfect weekend." he says "any weekend I get to spend with you is prefect sick or not" I say curling up on him. "Sweet dreams my love." says as he gives me a good night kiss. About 9 hours later we wake up to the smell of bacon. "Morning Sylvie." matt says placing a kiss on my lips. "Morning matt" I say as there was a knock on our door. "Come in" I say. "Breakfast will be ready soon" Jason says "Oh thanks for letting us know Jason. We will be down shortly" I say as my brother walks away. We head down stairs for breakfast. We have bacon, pancakes and eggs with fresh squeezed orange juice. "Wow this is outstanding thanks for cooking this" matt says to my parents. "Not a problem we know you both love big breakfast" Neil says "anyone need a refill on coffee Martha asks."Sure I'll take a small cup" matt says. We sit around talking till about 10am. "Hey you can go get ready first" I tell him. "Sound good I'll let you know when I'm done." he says leaning down and placing a kiss on the top of my head. "So how are things going with Matt?" my mom asks me. "They are wonderful. I'm so happy you made me ask him to come 4 years ago. I can't imagine my life without him." I say with the biggest smile. "He's been really good for you. I can tell how happier you have been theses last 4 years. Any plans for the future. "She says "mom!" I says "just asking that's all;" she says "Well we have talked about it. But that was just under a year ago. It will happen when it happens in the mean time I'm happy with how things are. I love him and he loves me that's all that really matters to me." I say.
Casey's POV
I was thankful that Sylvie let me get ready first upstairs alone. I need some way of putting the ring in my jacket without her noticing. I had just finished changing and getting ready for the day. I reach in to the secret compartment of my suitcase and pull out the ring. I put it in the bottom of my jacket pocket and throw on the jacket. I then walk downstairs to let Sylvie know she can go get ready. "Hey all finished your turn" I say to her as I find her on the couch with her mom. "Thanks will be down shortly" she says. "Take your time" I tell her as she walks upstairs. "So a little birdie might have told me what was happening this weekend. Welcome to the family. You nervous to ask her." Martha says with a smile. "Not nervous at all. Honestly, I would have asked her the day we started dating but I knew with our past we needed to take it slow." I say. "You know she would have said yes if you asked her then. My girl is crazy about you. but understand the wanted to take things slow." she says I'm just hoping the weather holds out for tonight I heard there might be some rain" I say "lets hope" she says with a smile as Sylvie comes walking down the stairs. "All set for a day of fun" she says walking over to me. "What's with that big smile mom" she asks. "Just happy to see you to so happy together. That's all" Martha says
Sylvie's POV
It's about noon by the time we arrive at the fair. Hey was thinking food first then rides?" I say as we walk in. "Sure I was thinking we could hit up that pizza place down by the end of the food lane." He says "oh pizza sounds good to me" I say as we walk in that direction. The food was amazing some of the best pizza I've had in Fowlerton. After we eat we go on ride after ride. "You tired of fast rides" I ask Matt. "Never. I've learned with you the faster the better." He says leaning down for a kiss. "Was thinking we could do the swings. We could sit in the double. If you want." I say "double it is" he says leading us towards the swings. The rest of the afternoon goes by pretty fast. We even had a late dinner in the evening with my parents. I love that we all can get along. "Well thank you for dinner" Neil Matt says "yeah thanks dad" I say Matt leans over and whispers something in my ear. I can't help but smile as he pulls me up over to the dance floor. He spins me around to the sound of the music. I can't help but laugh as he dips me. We dance right into the next song as the sun fades below the horizon. We dance a few more songs before heading back to join my parents at the table. "You two looked so cute out there" my mom says to us. "Hey what do you say we make your way to the Ferris wheel? The fireworks should be starting soon." He says to me with a smile. "Yeah we can get the best seat in the house. Care to join us mom and dad. There's plenty of room for all 4 of us in one bucket" I ask them. "Nah sweetie you guys go head. It's your thing. We are meeting Jason soon. So you guys go and have fun." She says. Matt takes my hand in his as we head over to the Ferris wheel.
Casey's POV
I was so lucky that we had the same Ferris wheel as we did last year. I was really hoping for it to help with the proposal. I'm a semi traditional guy and really wanted to get down on one knee. I wasn't sure how I was going to do that up in the air in a two person seat. Luckily for me this Ferris wheel had umbrella bucket seats that sat in a circular shape. It had a big enough floor that I could easily get down on one knee. I help Sylvie up into the bucket and slide in next to her. "I always love the lights from up here." she says as the Ferris wheel starts to turn. "Yeah the view is amazing." I say looking at her. "Who knew 4 years later we would be making this thing a tradition. You know 4 years ago my life changed for the better." I say bumping her shoulder as the fireworks started. "I never in a million years thought that I would fall in love again, thought that I would find someone who loved me for me. I never knew that I was chasing shadows all through my life until I found you, you make every good thing possible in my life, I want to be beside you to make every one of your dreams come true. You are the best thing that has happened to me. Life is simply better with you in it." I say. "Matt, what's going on?" she asks me with a slight smile forming on her face. I give her hand a squeeze and smile back at her. "I can't imagine a life without you, not even for a second." I say as I turn to get down on one knee. She has a shocked look on her face. "With the line of work we are in. I don't wanna wait another minute to start a life with you. Will make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me?" I say pulling out the ring. She's speechless; all she does at first is nod her head yes with teary eyes. "Yes a million times yes" she says, leaping into my arms to kiss me. "Oh Matt the ring is gorgeous." she says with a smile.
Sylvie's POV
We are watching the fireworks go off as we sit atop the Ferris wheel. Matt reaches over and takes my hand in his. "Who knew 4 years later we would be making this thing a tradition. You know 4 years ago my life changed for the better." he says bumping my shoulder. It makes me smile. He starts talking again as the fireworks continue all around us. "I can't imagine a life without you, not even for a second." he says as he turns to get down on one knee in front of me I look at him shocked. "With the line of work we are in. I don't wanna wait another minute to start a life with you. Will make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me?" he says pulling out the ring. I am speechless; all I can do is nod my head yes with teary happy eyes. "Yes a million times yes" I say, leaping into his arms to kiss him. "Oh Matt the ring is gorgeous." I say with a smile as he puts it on my finger. The ring is a vintage-like delicate thin band 14k white gold engagement ring that features 2 pavé-set round diamonds surrounded by a milgrain edge. "I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you" I say as we sit back on the metal bench seat. I pull out my phone and we snap a picture of us with me holding up my hand with the ring on it just as a firework exploded in the background. We take another one with a kiss. It was the perfect way to end a perfect weekend.
