Yasmeen

It is a lovely Saturday and I was having a wonderful day, but my joy was cut short when Ahmad decided I was going to spend the day at Ummy's

Here I am, seated in the living room with Ummy and her children having a conversation. As I listened to their conversation, It was not their irritating assumptions that annoyed me so much as their cultural confusions.

They seem to confuse culture with religion, standard of living with quality of life, discipline with arrogance, patience with weakness, humility with dumbness, shyness with lack of civilization, equal opportunity with institutionalized mediocrity, machismo with manhood, liberty with freedom, fun with pleasure and so on

In their desire to make their points, they kept missing the point. I tune out of their conversation at some point as I desperately searched for an escape. I didn't want to leave just like that for I know I would face the wrath of Ahmad if I did

"Aminu" suddenly walked in. He is Ummy's husband's son and the most talked about resident of this house lately.

He went straight to the dining area with full confidence.

His perfect walk and perfect poseture got my attention. He had a quality of masculine confidence that is a thousand times more potent than mere handsomeness. Perfect goodlooks could leave you cold, but this kind of sexy charisma went straight to your knees.

All our heads turned towards him and we all stared in admiration. He made me realize that It does not take the striking pose of a high fashion model or the strict stance of someone in uniform to earn respect and admiration.

He looked like a vampire who could woo any woman with his charm and charisma

"Good afternoon Ummy" he said, with his eyes glued to his phone, not waiting for her response.

Ummy ignored him, she didn't utter a word to him.

He served himself some food and sat at the dining table enjoying his meal

"Aminu, Am I the only one you see here? For Gods sake, why do you treat your sisters like this?" Ummy asked, with bitterness evident in her voice.

Aminu looked up at Ummy and smiled, "My step sisters" He corrected her.

"There is no harm if they greeted me first, just like I have greeted their mother even though it's not an obligation to me" Aminu told Ummy. With that, he went back to whatever he was doing on his phone

There is a stubbornness about him that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. His courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate him.

Aminu cannot compromise his self respect for their love. They kept their love, and he kept his self respect.

He is content to be simply himself, he doesn't compare or compete with Ummy or any of her children even Though it's his fathers house, and Ummy is the one that moved into his late mother's room shortly after she passed away.

Ummy also took Aminu's room and gave it to Ahmad's brother, he had to move to another room, which is smaller than his initial one.

The thing that hurts them the most is that they can take away his room, his father and everything else, but they cannot take away his self respect unless he is the one that gives it to them.

Ummy was speechless for a moment

"Aminu, do not disrespect me and my children. Finish eating and quickly crawl back to your nest. I'm sure you inherited your bad attitude from your mother, The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" She finally replied, nursing her wounded ego
