A point of clarification, if I may: In this novel, there is a character who refers to himself as the Santa Muerte. In order to distinguish this character from the Mexican folk deity known as the Santa Muerte, I have used regular font for the character and italics for the deity. The character believes himself to be the physical embodiment of the deity, but that may not (or may?) be accurate. Further, in the Spanish language, it may be unusual for a male to refer to himself by a feminine name or title. This discrepancy is pointed out by other characters in the story.
