Dream has trust issues. When he was younger, everyone only wanted to be by him because he'll give them happiness.
He realized he didn't have any true friends and he was only being used.
He grows up with this train of thought and he know has trust issue. He can only seem to trust his brother, but since Nightmare turned against him, it's been worse than ever. It took ages for Dream to open up to Blue and Ink, but he still doesn't fully trust them.
And then if you wanted to make it a ship book you could have Killer or Cross or Outer or something come into his life and help help him sort out his trust issues and eventually fall in love. Idk.
I've never seen or read a book were Dream has trust issues. And I think it could work. If he's only being used for happiness, he would start to develop some trust issues if he's in a toxic relationship or if he's dealing with fake people. Dream is always so happy, there's gotta be some sadness behind that smile.
