Nightmare can't feel love. But *insert person here* loves him and is determined to try and get him to feel love. Over time, Nightmare starts getting used to this behavior and starts copying the behavior as well. Because people copy other people that are around them. That's how babies learn to talk and where the saying "you are who you surround yourself with" comes from. This tricks him into wrongfully thinking he does in fact like *insert person here* because he is doing the same things and acting the same way, thus, he must feel love and feel the same way. But because he has never felt love before, he thinks this is what love is supposed to feel like because he doesn't know what love is not supposed to feel like.

I think I saw this somewhere, where Cross was trying to get Nightmare to feel love, but it didn't work because Nightmare can't feel love I guess. I feel like this is a common theme but I haven't seen it much so... here take this!
