Carlo's POV

"Excuse me, I'd like to retire." Ojiro said, I couldn't help but snap my gaze towards him. "Ojiro?! Why?!" "You're not going to have many opportunities like this to show off to the professional heroes!!" Our classmates reasoned, trying to convince him otherwise. He looked down a bit then explained himself. "In the cavalry battle... I was in the top ranks in the last few seconds... I can't agree with that! It was probably the quirk of that one guy!" Does he mean... Shinsou...? "But still! You can only get this chance once a year!" I said, desperately.

"I know that! And turning it down would be stupid, it's just... Everyone else gave their all just to get here. I won't be able to do the same even if I tried to." The blond said, looking dejected. Then, Hagakure spoke. "You don't have to think of that! There's no problem if you give your best until the end!" She said. "On the other hand, if you say it that way, 'I'm not the same as you'?" Mina spoke, causing Ojiro to place his hand on his face.

He said something about dignity and stuff but I couldn't hear him properly when my earrings started to ring. I jolted and immediately took them off. At that moment, the blond asked why were we in cheerleading outfits. I looked down at my earrings and noticed that it was broken. "What the..." I whispered harshly to myself, examining the accessory in my hands. The right earring was... red. Blood red. While the left had burn marks on it. I kind of understood why the left one is like that. But the right one? I poked the red part to check, hoping that it wasn't what I thought it was. It has the same consistency of actual blood. My eyes widen in shock and confusion, dread slowly took hold of my senses. How did-- My train of thought was cut off when it was time to start.

Ojiro and another guy from my team resigned, replaced by two people from class B. I frowned, I know they felt the need to step down because of Shinsou's quirk, but I just couldn't help but feel disappointed about it for some reason. Kiri patted me on the shoulder, causing be to turn my head to look at him. "What's up, bro? You've been looking at those for a while." He asked, worried. I just shook my head with a smile. "I can check it out later. So! Who are we fighting with?" I said and tried to change the topic. Luckily, it worked and my red haired friend talked about the match up. He said that I had to fight Mina and that he would fight that guy from 1-B. Chuckling at how he grumbled about the copy-pasting quirk thing, I patted him on his back as a certain pink girl came running to us. "Carlo! You should join us and the girls!" Mina said and shook her pompoms.

I turned her down with a smile and she pouted, puppy dog eyes in display. "Sorry! I'd rather not overheat again, really." "Overheat?" Both the red head and pinkette said in sync. Oh right! Only a few people knew! I thought and ended up playing with my hair as I explained it to them. They both nodded and just grinned at me. "Don't worry! If you feel like you're going to burst, you can come to me! I always drink water anyway!" Mina said and I just nodded. "Yama!! Are you okay?!" I heard Haku call me and I looked at where she was. She was covered in dirt and rust stains, looking a bit haggard. Behind her was Ryuu, who was also in the same state.

Confused, I excused myself from my companions and went to them. "What happened to both of you?! Did an invention explode?" I asked and they both chuckled nervously. "Well..." Ryuu started, "Haku told me you started panicking when your earrings and glasses weren't functioning. So-" "So we tried to recreate them but the circuitry was so small, and we asked Mei for help." Haku finished. They stayed silent after. "And?" "Mei is known for her inventions exploding every now and then." "Oh... Wait, what?!" They were about to answer me but the first match was about to start.

We had to separate so I told them to explain things to me later. But before I could leave, Haku pulled me back and placed a box in my hands. "What's this?" "What else do you think it is?" She answered with a grin. My eyes widened and I opened it immediately. It was a new pair of earrings and glasses. I felt my feathers ruffle in excitement and at the loving chuckle the two had at my reaction upon seeing them. You know, like a parent.
