I shut the door to the tiny apartment

I shut the door to the tiny apartment. Placed my purse on the nearby stack of drawers before making my way towards the small kitchen. Elek followed closely behind. I flipped the light switch and retrieved the barley filled bottle of whiskey and two short glasses.

'It's all we got,' I apologised as I begin to pour into each of glasses, only so much as enough for one or two sips. I passed one glass to Elek. 'What shall we toast to?'

Elek swirled the whiskey in his glass, 'I think tonight demonstrated that we do in fact make a pretty good team. To us.'

'When we're not tearing at each other's throats? Yeah I suppose so.'

'I guess you could say that,' Elek raised his glass and I mimicked him. 'To us.'

'To us,' I repeated and clinked our glasses.

I titled my head back slightly and closed my eyes, allowing the whisky to roll over my tongue, dwelling on the flavour, before letting it slip smoothly down.

'I must admit that when I first met you, my impression of you has changed quite substantially.'

'Really, how so?' I arched a brow.

'Well...you were seemed quite apprehensive, almost dainty-like, but curious – still are. But now I see you're more than just curious, you are daring, resilient and many times outspoken – not in a bad way,' he said quickly.

'Outspoken?'

'You always have a smart-arsed response for everything.'

'I'll take that as a compliment.'

'What was your first impression of me?'

'Mhm,' I thought. 'Defiant, independent and smooth—'

'Smooth?'

'You could sweep any woman off their feet if you wanted to. Remember the tailor's daughter?'

'God, that woman wouldn't leave me alone,' he laughed at the memory.

'But most importantly fearless. I don't think that has changed.'

'You think I'm fearless?' He sounded a bit taken back by my choice of words.

'Yes,' I breathed.

Why had it sudden become hard to say?

He paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts.

'I'm not fearless,' He lowered his gaze to the floor. 'There's not a day that goes by when I wake up in the morning and think whether it will be my last,' Elek sounded slightly embarrassed.

'What's important is that you don't let fear control you. I admire that about you.'

I placed the empty glasses in the sink, 'You can take my bed for tonight. Ellis is on weapons drop. She won't be back at least for another day...First door on your left,' I directed him.
