Saleem:

The thing with poverty is that it seeps into every aspect of your life, wrapping vice like around the most important things until you feel like choking, gargling on your own despair.

Sometimes I feel like quitting my part time job, robbing a bank and running off to an island where I can live peacefully, starting afresh.

It's not easy being Saleem Abdallah, A thirty year old shuwa Arab guy living in the USA, for Only three things are consistent in my life. My soul crushing poverty, a shitty love life and getting stuck in the middle of my writing.

With so many thoughts running through my head as i walk home after the writers club meeting I have recently enrolled in, I spotted a pretty madly in Love couple, holding hands as they walk leisurely along the street. They looked so good together, like two pieces of a puzzle that fit perfectly.

I admired them so deeply. I tried as hard as possible to take my eyes off them when they noticed me staring, but I couldn't.

After a furious battle with my eyes and mind I managed to look away, slowed my pace and decided to cross the street before they call 911 and report a wired psycho intruder that's been following them around and intently staring at them.

I was about to cross the street when I saw an incoming car at full speed, heading towards our direction. I quickly scrambled, jumping to the other side in a last-ditch effort to avoid getting hit.

Before I could catch a glimpse of the mad person behind the wheel, the car lost balance and came crashing into the side walks as the driver struggled with the brakes.

The speeding car catapulted the couple through the air, and Their bodies were launched across the freeway like slung dolls.

The man flew 10 feet, his body pounding on the concrete and smashing his nose. His girlfriend flew 30 feet, shattering the bones in her face, jaw and collarbone, bursting her scull, and also mangling her spinal cord.

As they lay there barely alive, Another Incoming car from the opposite direction came out of nowhere and ran over the girls body at full speed.

I, who has managed to escape their fate ran to their bodies to see if They were alive. The girl is painted red with blood, and her body appears to be disfigured.

Surprisingly, the man is still conscious and is murmuring out something I couldn't even hear.

I quickly pulled out my phone with my trembling arms and dialed 911. I don't know what I said in that moment of panic and terror, but the rescue team arrived shortly afterwards. They called back up while loading the couple in the back of their van and left the scene in a hurry.

I saw a phone lying on the floor which I'm sure it's one of the victims's, I quickly grabbed it. I searched the phone book and call history to see if I can get a contact for a family member or anyone close to the couple. Luckily I saw the name "Sister Ameera", I quickly copied the number and dialed it with my phone. Unfortunately, it rang several times but nobody answered.

With shaky legs and trembling lips, I put away the phones and impatiently waited for the second van which arrived minutes later.

I watched The paramedics and an auto body mechanic working along side as they successfully retrieved the driver out of the damaged beyond repair vehicle unharmed and unscathed which was a miracle considering the damaged being done to the vehicle.

I was expecting to see a stupid drunk teenager with bursted head, broken ribs and bloody nose. But I saw a strikingly beautiful lady, unconscious, head hanged around her shoulders, with no visible injuries and still breathing.

She looked so sweet and full of light even in her unconscious state, as if she is on fire from within. The moon lives in the lining of her skin.

They hurriedly loaded her in the paramedic van and told me to hop in, which I did without hesitation and we headed to the nearest hospital.

Like a thief, the image of her taut, well-formed body crept into my mind next. I marveled how beautifully her body arched as she lay on the stretcher.

She has the grace and gravitas of an empress, and I swear, even the Deities must pause to look at her if she walks into a room.

The paramedics did their best to keep the reckless driver conscious before reaching the hospital. One of them filled a form for her with the name, "Aaliyah Muhammad" which is the same name on her ID card which he was lucky enough to find at the accident scene.

He also gave me the same form to fill, because I was a witness and a victim as well. He is going to submit a copy of each at the hospital and a copy at the police station.

On entering the hospital, I saw the couple again. But this time, the male was crying his eyes out as he violently shook the lifeless body of his girlfriend in the hopes that she would come back to life, It took five men to hold him down and the doctor sedated him.

I saw the girls broken scull and bloody nose. I saw blood again, the one thing I haven't been able to stand my whole life, that's why I hardly visit the hospital if it's not necessary.

A rush of nausea swept over me and I suddenly felt dizzy, the room started spinning around and the crowd of people before me began to blur until all I could see is a sea of distorted shapes. And Then I passed out.

I regained consciousness few minutes later with the help of a doctor and some nurses in the hospital.

I gave them the victims phone not forgetting to ask them what the name of the guy is.

"Ammar is his name", a nurse told me before putting me to a few hours of bed rest and observation because of the trauma I have experienced.
