Part 2 of Too Late to Be Sorry

"And you'll come home safely, right?" You looked up at Liam.

"Of course," said Liam. "I would never leave you or Henry alone."

The baby in your arms cooed and Liam cracked a smile. He embraced you both and boarded the ship with Achilles. Then, the ship raised its sails and left the docks. You sighed, readjusting your grip on your baby boy before going back inside the homestead.

Everyone is gone now, save the remaining gang members. Hope, Kesegowaase, Chevalier, Liam, Achilles.....Shay. Gone.

Liam's still alive, of course as is Achilles. It's just, them leaving for Alaska is what worried you. You shook your head and trusted that Achilles knows what he's doing for Liam's sake. You sighed and pushed the door to your shared bedroom with Liam open and went inside.

"Your little one shouldn't be out here with you," said Elizabeth. "He will catch a pox like the rest of us."

It was another week of helping the needy and you didn't mind. Elizabeth did. She lost her grandchildren to Smallpox and she didn't want it to happen to your son.

"I'll be alright and so will Henry," you replied, handing Elizabeth a loaf of bread. "Take care of yourself first, Elizabeth. Please."

Elizabeth took the loaf from you then frowned.

"That young man is back. The one you chased after months ago." You stiffened and followed Elizabeth's line of vision.

Haytham stood far from the area, hands behind his back. As if he's waiting for you to come talk to him.

"Go on, Y/n. We'll be fine," said Elizabeth, giving you a gentle push. "Go on."

You washed your hands in a bucket and wiped your hands clean. You readjusted Henry on your back and tightened the cloth holding him before approaching Haytham.

"Haytham."

"Y/n."

"It's been a while."

"Too long I think, coward."

Haytham looked down at the ground before looking up to meet your e/c eyes. He noticed Henry on your back then his eyes met yours again.

"Do you have a moment?"

"I'm speaking to you now, am I not?"

"I mean in private."

"Are you bloody blind? Look around us!"

"I am asking because-"

"Because of what? Assassins?"

"Your husband is dead."

The world around you spun once Haytham's words hit you.

Liam. Dead? Gone? When? How?

"Y/n, I am sorry," said Haytham, gently cupping your cheeks. "It was necessary. He wouldn't have let me or Shay leave Alaska alive."

You smacked Haytham's hands away, tears threatening to spill.

"You stopped caring about me when Father died. You stopped talking to me when Father was buried. You didn't say anything to me when Mother was buried. Jenny hasn't said a word to me in years and you think it's fine if you want to comfort me now!? My husband is dead, Haytham! I am a widow and a single mother and I will not accept your bloody help! Where were you when I needed you the most?! Where were you! And Jenny! Where were you when I was so lost and alone and afraid!? NOWHERE!"

The waterworks flooded and Henry started to bawl along with you. Your screaming caused him to wake up and you didn't have the energy to calm him down. Haytham tugged you into his embrace, holding you tightly.

"I know I said I didn't deserve your forgiveness. I truly don't but that does not mean I still cannot be your brother. You don't have anywhere to go right now, Y/n. Please. Stay with me. You don't ever have to speak to me or repay me in any shape or form. Just stay."

Your hand clasped the back of Haytham's navy blue overcoat and Haytham took it as a sign of agreement. He took Henry off your back and took your hand in his. Then, he guided you to a carriage, helping you inside then getting in himself. The carriage started to move and you got lost in your thoughts.

You didn't register Haytham helping you out of the carriage or entering a fort. Everything is a blur and you didn't care.

Henry finally quieted down and fell asleep. Haytham tucked Henry in an infant bed and opened the door to leave. He looked back at your worn figure, contemplating if he should stay or leave you to your own devices.

You didn't move when Haytham draped his coat over you or when he undid your hair. Liam's death will haunt you for the rest of your life just as it did to your mother. The worst part is, Henry won't even remember who his father is. He won't have a recollection of how his father looked like, what he sounded like, and who he is.

Shay came by the next day. Seeing you so broken made his heart clench. He's seen you arm in arm with Liam, laughing and smiling. Seeing you like this made him regret killing Liam, but it was necessary. Maybe, just maybe, if he had known Liam fathered a son; Liam would still be here.

Eventually, as the years went by, you got better. Not fully recovered but better. Eventually, you did forgive Shay and Haytham. Even if it hurt to admit it. You learned what the Precursor Sites did to Lisbon and Tahiti. Knowing that the assassins wanted to use it as a weapon, it was sickening.

"Daddy? Can you help me tell me more about your sailing days?" Shay stiffened and turned around to face Henry.

Now at six-years-old, Henry turned out to resemble his father well. His bright blue eyes especially.

"Shay? Did I say something wrong?"

Shay shook out of his thoughts and took Henry's hand.

"Let's look for your mother, yeah?"

Henry played outside of the estate under your careful watch with Shay by your side.

"Henry....he....he sees me as his father, Y/n."

You sighed and looked at Henry, watching him chase after the children.

"It's so hard, Shay. It's so damn hard and I don't know how I'm still functioning."

Shay cupped your cheek and you leaned into his touch.

"You still have your brother and me. Don't you ever forget that."
