Enjoy! (Unedited).

"Your call has been forwarded to an automatic voice message," The machine says for the tenth time.

"Ugh, Hiro, where are you? The movie is starting! We've been waiting for this for months." You take a deep breath. "Are you flaking out on me? Whatever. I'm going home."

You stand up, grab your popcorn, and walk out. You shove handfuls of the buttery kernels in your mouth as you walk down the sidewalk towards your home. You fall asleep soon after stepping into your door.

The sound of your phone ringing wakes you just an hour and a half later. You don't even check to see who it is. It's only Hiro who ever calls you.

"I'm not in the mood for your apologies, Hamada," You say harshly.

"___?" The voice that isn't Hiro's says. "It's Tadashi."

"Oh, h-hey."

"What does my idiotic brother have to apologize for now?" Tadashi asks.

"He never showed up to the movie."

"He what?" Tadashi demands. "He left earlier."

"He did?" You ask, surprised.

"Where could he-" Tadashi cuts off as he comes to the realization that you had already come to.

"Bot fight," The two of you say together.

You sigh. "I'll go handle this one."

"Alright. I'll track Hiro using that tracker I put in his hoodie and then text you a map of where he went."

"Sounds great," You say.

"I'm sorry that my brother did that to you," Tadashi says.

"Wouldn't be the first time."

Ten minutes later, you walk downtown to what was thought to be an abandoned warehouse. Tadashi sends you a text just before you reach the building:
He's just outside of the building, around the back. Be careful and send him home safely so I can beat some sense into that brain.

You smile and text back:
No worries. We'll be out of here in five minutes.

Sadly, that wasn't completely true.

"Look, guys, come on- this is ridiculous! I won! I played fair!" Hiro shouts. His voice cracks with fear.

"You tricked us, boy! Now you're gonna pay!" A deep voice says.

Youe eyes widen. There was no way you could let anyone hurt Hiro; even if he did mess up sometimes. You sprint around the side of the building, just as a large man with many tattoos and piercings and bright neon green hair raises his fist. He has a fistful of Hiro's shirt and is holding him against the brick building. Beside him, a small girl with bright pink hair smirks.

"Whoa, whoa, hey guys. What's the problem here?" You ask, swallowing your fear.

"Who are you? Get lost!" The girl says.

"This is none of your business, girl," The man hisses.

"Uh, well, technically it is since that's my best friend and he is already in enough trouble as it is."

Hiro smiles guilty. "Sorry."

"Save it," You say harshly, shaking your head. "Give the guy his money back now."

"But I won this-" Hiro takes one look at your burning eyes and frowns. "Fine." Hiro holds out a wad of bills and the man takes it, releasing his grip on Hiro. Hiro steps away, brushing his shirt off and glancing over at you.

"Okay. So we're good now."

The man and woman glance at each other, smirking. "Of course."

"Great. Let's go then, Hiro." Without looking back, you stomp down the street quickly.

Hiro sighs and follows, quickening his pace to catch up. "___, ___, just wait. I can explain why I didn't-"

"I don't want to hear it, Hiro," You say harshly. Rain begins to fall from the dark clouds that hide the stars.

"Look, I'm sorry, okay?" He says, sighing. You turn back and look at him. The rain begins to pour and you blink away drops of water from your eyelashes. "I'm sorry too, Hiro. I thought that I meant more to you than bot fighting. Guess I was wrong."

"No, no, ___." You ignore him. You shake your head and begin to cross the road. Suddenly a car swerves around a corner, it's headlights blinding you as you stand frozen in the middle of the road. "___!" You barely see the bright colors of green and pink hair through the windshield.

The car hits you, hard. You shoot back, your vision going black. You have no idea how far you flew backwards, or if you really did. All you knew was that there was a chance you could die.

"___?" Hiro asks, running to you. "Oh God, ___, open your eyes!" He pauses, dialing 911 on his phone. "We need help, my friend was hit . . . ___, please open your eyes!"

Your eyes are closed? You struggle to open them. When you do, you see Hiro's panicked eyes. Drops of rain fall on your face and you whimper, an intense wave of pain hitting your torso. You whimper. "Hiro."

"I'm here, right here."

"It hurts," You say, your voice breaking.

"I know, I know. Help is coming, you'll be okay."

You knew better. You draw a shaky breath and shake your head. "No."

"Yes. Don't give up on me, ___. Not now." Hiro takes your hand and holds it to his lips. "I love you," he whispers against your skin.

"I love you too. A-and I wasn't really mad. I was just hurt, you know?"

"I'm so sorry," He whispers.

"They did it."

"What?" Hiro asks.

"Those bot fighters," You whisper, groaning in pain.

"I'm so sorry," He whispers again. "I should've listen to Tadashi."

"Yeah," You say, forcing a smile. "You should've. But hey, we all mess up."

Hiro laughs quietly. All at once, your pain goes away. Your hand goes limp in Hiro's and you relax your muscles. "Wait. Don't go! ___?"

Your eyes close. "Hiro," is the last thing you whisper. Your heart stops and you finally feel weightless, happy. You were heading towards a happier place you knew.

"No! Don't give up, please. Breathe!" The sirens wail through the air, drowning out Hiro's sobs. "I'm sorry. . . I'm sorry."
