She could still feel his cold caress of her cheek. His eyes, one of them hazy, sadly gazing up at her before he lost his battle with consciousness.

"He's not dead!" She sobbed. "Don't talk about him as if he's dead."

Her voice became quieter with each word until it trailed off in desolation. She felt Haneul attempt to embrace her, but her body remained rigid, her gaze still searing into the nurse's head, the same nurse that suggested she seek grief counseling that was unnecessary.

Because he was still alive.
Wasn't he?

Everything happened so quickly. While anyone else would have focused on self-preservation, his priority was to them. He couldn't avoid the crash, so he did what he could to ensure their safety.

His actions had preserved their lives. Surely the universe would reward his sacrifice by sparing his?

Multiple surgical team members rushed throughout the room finishing final preparations for the young man currently being wheeled into the operating theater. Orders were called out and executed without delay. To the untrained eye, the suite looked to be in absolute chaos. In reality, the team worked like a finely tuned engine, each surgeon, nurse, and assistant performing their roles under the pressure that their speed and accuracy were crucial to his survival.

In the midst of the organized frenzy, the lead surgeon spoke as she readied herself to perform. "Who do we have today?"

A nurse swiftly delivered, his voice raised for all to hear. "This is Jungkook. He was in a car accident and has abdominal and intracranial bleeding putting pressure on his brain. He's a college student that turned 20 a few months ago, he's getting married soon and has a 7-month-old daughter, ma'am."

The surgeon nodded at the nurse's report and picked up her first tool. "Let's try to get Jungkook back to his family."
