After Alice talked on the phone, someone talked behind her.

Her whole body shuddered. Not expecting someone was eavesdropping or was behind her.
It was Jack.
She said "Oh! You're here."
He was just looking at her dead in the eyes, not even blinking, wearing a cheeky grin, as he stood steadily. Creepy enough for her to think that there's something wrong with him.

Her whole body froze and she stuttered, "It was-uh-the police."
"And?"
"I wanted to be more hands-on with the case, myself."
"What did you tell them?" He tilted his head.
"Nothing."
"What did I tell you-Didn't I tell you to get your hands off the case?"
"And why would I do that?"
"You have to include me..." He took a few steps forward in her direction. She looked around and no one's in sight.
"I said I can do it."
"I can protect you, Alice."
"Where--Where's Aunt Maria and the others?" She gave a nervous laugh.
"Oh, they're sleeping." He stopped in front of her.
"Sleeping? At lunch?"
"I don't know. They're in their respective rooms, I guess."
"Aren't we supposed to be eating lunch?"
"Lunch? I thought you wanted to go to the sea?"
Alice felt strange that she's feeling like something bad was about to happen.
"I changed my mind."
"Oh come on, we'll have a great view there. Very peaceful and quiet. No one's around. We can have the place all by ourselves."
"Where are they, really?"
"I don't know. It's a big house. Do you know where they are?" He showed a cunning smile.
