Greg didn't usually carry his gun around. He took it with him when he knew he was going into a dangerous situation, like if he was confronting a criminal, or if Sherlock dragged him into some crazy shenanigan.

He also took his gun whenever he knew he would be with Mycroft. Not because he was afraid of Mycroft, or because he thought he would need protection against Mycroft.

He took his gun because he knew, however much the other man had tried to hide it from him, that Mycroft's job was dangerous.

He'd known from day one that Mycroft's umbrella wasn't just an umbrella. He'd known about the gun hidden inside for a very long time. He'd known that there was a reason Mycroft had to carry a gun, so he carried one too.

He'd often thought about what might happen, what could happen, if he didn't have his gun and that was the one time someone tried something.

Nothing ever has happened, he doubts anything will ever happen, but he isn't about to risk Mycroft's life. He never has, he never would. It's that simple.
