Grayson's POV

The tunnel came into view, we had been driving for roughly an hour already. The tunnel was dark, no lights to illuminate the absence of sunlight

We drove slowly, careful not to bump into anything and get in any sort of damage to the car. The lights of the car flickered slightly and only helped with a couple feet in front of the car. High beams didn't work so we just stayed with the normal ones

Driving slow, a couple minutes had passed with mostly Michelle talking about different things, mostly to the bears while Ethan and I listened in. It was a nice atmosphere created by the dark surroundings and small soothing chatter from Michelle

Lights flickered off for a couple seconds as Ethan stopped the car, waiting for them to turn back on. A large flash of light blinded our sight as a couple shadowy figures of black obscured the white back-round

A loud voice told us to step out with our hands in the air, whispering at Michelle to duck down and stay inside, hidden, maybe she could escape if they don't notice her, sacrificing ourselves for her, "run back if they shoot, okay" I said stepping out with Ethan, arms raised up in the air as we stood by the car

A few came up, handcuffs in hand as they turned us around, pushing us against the car, hands behind our backs as they handcuffed us

"Who are you" they asked

"We're not with the others, we're from America, our last town got raided, we're just trying to get to Canada, we heard that that's where everything's better, a salvation for survivors"

We were breathing heavily, scared of the outcome, time passed of suspense before some nodded at one another, taking us to the back of a truck

"We'll take you back with us to Ottawa, that's where the main base is, where we're keeping everyone for safety"

Before stepping onto the back of the military truck "Wait, we have, um someone else in the car..."

A couple people walked over with raised guns, one opening the passenger door to reveal a frightened Michelle, tears forming in her eyes as they slid down her cheeks, whimpering as she stayed still

The guns were let down, several others still pointed to the entrance of the tunnel, careful to the possibility of this being a trap

They led Michelle over to the truck, helping her up as she walked over to the two of us, crawling up into my lap as she laid her head on my shoulder facing Ethan, caressing the side of her face in comfort as I rubbed her back, stifling her tears

The truck revved up, shaking to life as we started to move, the cold breeze coming from the fact that there was no roof brought goosebumps to our skin, shivering they threw over two blankets to keep us warm

Ethan wrapped one around Michelle and I, snuggling himself closer as he draped one over himself, hugging my side as our heads laid on one another

The car bumped a couple times waking me up, opening my eyes, blurry as I blinked to get my clear vision back. Ethan and Michelle still with their heads on my shoulder, asleep

I looked out ahead of me to see we were entering a fenced off area, a couple buildings being passed with people in them who would talk with the driver before letting them pass inside

We entered a silo before people started to step out, seeing we would be probably leaving too I shook Ethan awake, groggy with heavy eyelids

The doors to the back of the truck opened as there stood the people who sat in the front of the truck, along with a few others

They told us to follow them as I got up, careful for Michelle when I stepped down onto the concrete floor, Ethan behind me as he caught up, with a hand on my back we kept walking

~•~

We had left the silo which they used for parking, walked for about ten minutes before entering a building where all the officers and such stayed, including the prime minister, but we were only here to see a lower field officer that controlled the citizens, where they lived, food and water, things like that

Walking up a flight of stairs before turning into a couple hallways until we came to a stop in front of a room

They had guards with us, they entered first as we followed after, sitting down in the chairs they led us too before John, the officer we were sent to asked us where we had come from

We told him the whole story, from where we started, when we met, our encounters with the others, finding the town we had stayed at previously which they had known as they have had contact with them several times before but not recently, telling them what happened there and how we left to the cabin, staying there for a couple months before deciding to come here

He explained everything, telling us what the whole war was, how there had been talk of it before but no one took it seriously or into consideration but war was a serious thing and the prime minister wanted to be ready and cautious, he didn't want an incident like Hiroshima where after warning nothing was done and the outcome was brutal, he prepared and was ready and was fortunate enough to have everything ready before it all went to hell

They rebuilt the capital of Ottawa to continue their plan of making it the safe place of Canada, and so far have succeeded

After a few more conversations of what went on here we saw it was pretty similar to the old towns standards, we were assigned jobs as suppliers, we just kept everything in check, brought in the goods others would go out and come back with, stock it in different buildings, assigned what food goes to where

We were given a small apartment in one of the buildings, we hauled our stuff over with the guidance of a guard, she told us where to go for our jobs, where to go for our weekly payments of food, water and such we would need and were left in our apartment, we didn't start for another three days, giving us time to settle in and get to know how this place runs
