"So what should I wear to the beach party tonight?" I fiddle with my drink waiting for Lea to finish her shift at the shack. I had been down at the beach all day and she had seen me when she was on her way to taking a group of customers snorkeling. She told me to pass by at this time to plan for later since it was her turn to close up the shack today.
"Well, most girls will probably be in their bikinis, showing as much skin as possible. I usually stick to wearing my bikini UNDER some nicer clothes because I don't consider myself desperate." She gestures mockingly towards two girls who are by the shore wearing the smallest bikini's possible and throwing themselves at a guy, making me laugh.
"Ok, so clothes over a bikini it is,"
Lea moves out of the shack and closes up, locking the door, and we start walking in the direction of my house.
"So where do you live?" I dig my feet in the warm sand every step I take, loving the feeling of the warm soft sand coating my feet.
She points in-front of us to the house by the one I'm staying in, "I'm staying there this weekend, it's my aunties house. The one that owns the diner. It's just her, my uncle and my cousin but I stay there quite often since its more convenient for me. You will probably meet him tonight, we usually hang out since he is Ethan's best friend also - my cousins house basically my second home and his parents usually stay in the flat above the diner if they stay there too late since they have to wake up early to open up again." She pauses, "Growing up it was usually Ethan, my cousin and I doing stuff together all the time." She shrugs and continues, "Then we started high school and our circle grew a little but we are still close to each other. We even opened up the surf shack two years ago, before then it had been closed for a couple of years. My auntie was kind enough to give it to us." I can tell she is fond of her family.
"Isn't it awkward some times?" I hesitate before continuing, "I mean, you and Ethan seem to be into each other so wouldn't that make your cousin the third wheel?" In the background you can hear the waves crashing softly on the shore.
"Not really, I mean Ethan isn't my boyfriend and - like I said - we usually do hang out with a bigger group now. Plus my cousin and Ethan are both too busy focusing on all the other females on the beach to notice my feelings." Lea exhales in bewilderment and shrugs her shoulders weakly.
Even though I haven't known Lea for long I can tell that there is much more to the story than she is letting on.
"Well, forget those idiots. Actually, forget the male gender altogether! This summer you have a new friend and I've heard she is pretty awesome. With her by your side there won't be any time for boys just a whole load of fun!" Playfully bumping her shoulder with mine, I skip ahead of her, "AND this amazing new friend just happens to be your neighbor for the summer!" I make am exaggerated gesture to the house beside hers as we approach.
"No way! You are the one who rented the house for the summer!" Lea's eyes widen in shock. Then she throws her arm over her head dramatically, "I guess our friendship was just meant to be!"
We both burst out into cackles of unattractive laughter not caring who is watching. It is amazing how, with only two days In Australia, I've found someone who I get along with better than anyone back home. Although Lea was exaggerating and being dramatic, I was just happy I'd already found a friend here. Maybe it was fate - although I don't really believe in that - or maybe it wasn't. Whatever it is - I'm glad we met because it surely doesn't hurt to have a good friend for the time that I'm here.
