Amos looked down the barrel of his gun at Tod, who lay on the floor, in the shallow water. Only one thing stood in the way, of him taking his revenge.
His own son, Copper.
"Copper out of the way" he demanded.
Instead of obaying his father, Copper moved so that he was covering even more of Tod's broken body.
"Copper, do as I say" shouted Amos.
Copper shook his head. "No father. I'm not going anywhere".
Tod's jaw dropped. Copper was standing up to his father, to try and save her life.

"What do you mean?" Amos questioned.
"I am not going to let you kill her, without killing me first" replied Copper.
"You would risk your life for this negro?"
"She is a beautiful girl, and her name is Tod. She's not just a negro. She is an amazing person, and I love her. So I will not let you hurt her".
Amos lowered his gun, and stared at his son, as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"You love me?" Asked Tod quietly.
Copper turned, and smiled down at her.
"Possibly".
Tod smiled, and winced again.

"Alright then. Lets go home Copper" said Amos, sighing.
Copper ran over and hugged his father.
Pain crossed Amos's face as be put weight on his bad foot.
"Sorry" mumbled Copper.
Amos placed his arm around his son's shoulder, and the two of them limped away, leaving Tod alone.
But not for long.
Trixie came out of her hiding place, and ran towards her friend.
"I thought you were dead" said Trixie.
"Well I'm not. Not yet anyway" replied Tod.
"We need to get you to a doctor"
"Yep... How much did you hear earlier?"

"You mean that white boy confessing his love for you? And you snogging his face off? That bit?" answered Trixie.
Tod blushed. "Ah. You saw that".
"Yes, I did"
"Well, I'd appriciate it, if you didn't tell anyone about that"
"Fine. Now come on, lets get back to our own people".
Trixie placed her arm under Tod, and pulled her up, ignoring her cries of pain.
"Ready? Lean on me as much as you need to" offered Trixie.
"Thanks Trix" mumbled Tod, as she took her first painful step.
"You're welcome. But I'm afraid we are going to need to move faster than that, if we want to get home before nightfall"
"Ha ha"
"I'm serious. We don't want to stumble upon anymore bears in the dark"
"Now, that is not funny"
"Well not for you, no, I don't expect it was"
"Lets just focus on walking"
"Whatever you say".
