Birthday - SPECIAL [40k]

Start from the beginning

"You were with Dazai before you came here, right?"

I nodded. "Yeah, why?"

"What time did you leave?"

I shrugged, "I'm not sure. Maybe around 4 or so."

He looked at his watch, which almost immediately prompted me to look at my own.

8:34p

"You know what, I should actually probably leave now, I left Dazai at the agency doing some paperwork. So now I feel bad."

I started to get up, but Jung caught my wrist before I could go anywhere.

"Hey, stay here. I talked to him, and he told me to tell you not to worry about any of that, and that he'd be over later."

I gave him a doubtful look, but sat back down anyways.

"Um, okay. Well, can I go ask Lalisa if she's done cooking anything?" I hadn't eaten dinner, so I was a little hungry.

He shook his head, "Lalisa left a little bit ago. She said she'd be back soon though, so you can still ask Jennie if you want."

My brows knitted in confusion, "Do you know where Lalisa went?"

A flash of hesitation went through his eyes for a moment, but it went away as fast as it'd come. "No. All I know is that she'll be back soon."

I slumped back in the beach chair I was sitting in, letting out a huff.

"Okay."

He smiled and patted my arm, as if he was trying to say he proud of me for a reason I didn't care to wonder about.

We talked back and forth for a while, and it almost made me forget about all of the thoughts in the back of my head. It made me forget everything for a small moment, until Dazai and Lalisa came walking up.

"Hey, sorry we're late." Lalisa sent a smile to me, waving.

Dazai nodded in agreement with her words before he sat down next to me, setting a small bag by his feet.

"Hey," He whispered, placing a chaste kiss by the top of my cheekbone.

I smiled and whispered a small greeting back.

"You're good now?" Jung asked Dazai.

He nodded, answering nonchalantly, "Yeah, you guys ready to start?"

I looked between them, trying to figure out what was going on. But neither of them really acknowledged me, much less told me what was happening.

"Yeah, I think so."

"What are you both talking about?" I asked, feeling more confused by the second.

Dazai was the first to acknowledge me, by sending me a big grin.

"You'll see."

Could they be..?

Jung had since gone and gotten Jennie and Lalisa from whatever they were doing, and now we were all sitting around the small fire pit.

Everyone looked very happy, everyone looked slightly pleased as well, but for a reason I didn't know. In my haze of thoughts, Jennie stood up, clasping her hands together as she began to speak.

"Okay, so, I guess, in more ways than one, today has worked out well. No one's burnt themselves on the fire, and no one's gotten food poisoning yet," Jennie paused to look at Lalisa, who smiled, "but anyway, I mean, that's not the point."

She stopped to look at me, a small smile breaking out on her lips as she said, "Happy birthday Y/N!"

I couldn't help but smile. While I thanked her, while Dazai squeezed my hand, even when Jung popped a noisemaker. I just grinned, not knowing what to say.

I got an assortment of happy birthdays from the rest of the group, where various types of hugs and comments were also attached. I was happily conversing with everyone when Jennie told everyone to sit down.

Apparently, everyone knew that the sentence had a second meaning, so soon, there were small assorted boxes and bags in their hands.

I couldn't help but smile at all of this again. I really loved it, considering this was the most anyone had ever gone through for my birthday.

Jung handed me his gift first, the small box fitting easily into my hands.

The gifts went from there, each of them being very different from the last. I'd gotten a few of my favourite candles from Jung, a tshirt of my favourite band from Jennie, and a 'care pack' from Lalisa, that I had absolutely no idea what was in it.

Dazai's gift came last, and I have to say, it was probably my favourite.

It was a cupcake, a yellow iced one in familiar cheap hotel lobby packaging. Now, even after almost two years, I still recognised it.

flashback

My door opened and Dazai stood in the doorway.

"Oh, hi. Do you need something?" I asked softly, wiping my tears on the edge of my sleeve.

He smiled at me thoughtfully, "I remembered something when I was on my way here."

I hummed in response, wiping my eyes.

"I picked this up before I came, to give to you." He held out a small cupcake, which was no doubt from the convenience store down in the lobby of my apartment building.

He added, "Happy birthday. Sorry it's not much, I don't carry much money on me when I'm going to fight the Mafia."

I gave him a brief confused look, but decided to brush off what he had said as he gave me a small smile.

"Thank you." I smiled back, the feeling of tears gently prodding the back of my eyes.

"Despite the strange situation, it means a lot."

flashback end

I laughed as he handed it to me, small tears of happiness pricking the back of my eyes.

"A cupcake? That's lame." Jennie mumbled to herself.

Lalisa overheard her and smacked her on the arm.

"You went all the way to my old apartment building just to get me this cupcake?" I chided happily, looking down at the factory-made cupcake in adoration.

He nodded, "I did."

I shifted the small cupcake box in my hand and now looked at him in adoration.

"Thank you." I whispered softly, gripping his hand tightly.

He gave me a soft smile, "Anything."
